First Person Perspective games

Hi all,

Simple question:

I am running an "average" PC (Fairly decent Athlon) with a very average Video Card (128mB)

Love first person shooters, the last game I got totally immersed in was Half-Life.

Any recommendations for similar style games that don't need a beast of a PC to run?... am happy to look at games a few years old as they are more likelyto be able to run at decent quality on my system.

Donwloadable demo versions are preferable too, so i can try before I buy!!!

I quite liked Soldier of Fortune II which falls nicely into the 'looks good on a warm PC' category. Should be as cheap as chips on Amazon too.

I bet half-life 2 would run ok on your system. You may not be able to run it with mad water effects etc, but my PC is pretty average too, and I don't have any issues with hl2 (though I don't think it has the full-on immersion of the first one though).

Did you get the expansion packs for hl? Opposing forces was very well made, and a very big game too.

Seconded. But try far cry. Its processor intensive, but you can whack the settings down and still enjoy the gameplay which is superb.

Far Cry and HL2 should both be fine. Far Cry was *just* playable on my old P3 with 64MB graphics and HL2 was surprisingly fast. OK, maybe fast isn't the right word, but it was playable and looked amazing, not that much different to how it looks now on an X2 with 256MB 7800GT.

It's a shame that they never produced sequels to Ultima Underworld 2, UU1 came out in the same month as the original Wolfenstein but was overshadowed despite having far better graphics, a decent plot and nonlinear gameplay that needed thought rather than mindless shooting.

If Medal of Honor is too slow, you could try Hidden & Dangerous. It's still a great 1st person shooter but with more emphasis on stealth and strategy. When H&D2 came out, the publishers made the original version available for free download! Google and ye shall find. I'm reluctant to mention any specific site because I don't want to download 260MB and find it's faulty.

Oops, the Underworld thing just reminded me, the UU producer Warren Spector developed other 1st-person 3D games too. System Shock (and later SS2) was a space station themed game, where the computer had gone wild and taken over control. Standard zombie stuff but a worthwhile game that is much more than the standard shoot-em-up, although it was irritating because it used to respawn baddies behind you after you had killed em (which was removable with a patch).

The Thief series started around the same time but finished more recently. Thief 1 ran on a 486, Thief 2 ran well on a P3-550, Thief 3 struggled but was just playable on a P3, on your system it should be fine. It is a stealth game, with Thief 3 being particularly atmospheric. The Shalebridge / Cradle level has to be one of the scariest game levels ever.

Older games, around the time of the original Half life, but have you played Deus Ex or System Shock 2. Both really good games.

At last someone else who appreciates Thief 3 and the cradle level, have been banging on about it to everyone who goes on about scary games, they are not a patch on the fear I felt wandering around that place.
