Battlefield2 - Good UK ranked Server?
Discussion
As the thread title says really.
Just got the game after months of playing the demo (and being a casual player of Joint Operations for some time now) and have decided I might as well find a good server and try and stick to it. Need to get my rank up to start unlocking weapons etc. (Got 1 rank up last night after about an hour of play so guessing the later ranks take longer?)
Any BF2 players have tips on good servers to use, preferably UK based?
I'm not worried if the servers are full of veterans, best way to get into a game like BF2 is jump in at the deep end, certianly sharpens you up

Hi CivPilot,
I'm an ex JO player myself and I've been playing BF2 since it was launched.
I tried a few public servers but got fed up with the lack of team work and communication before joining the OBC (Old Bast**ds Clan - do a search for them in the BF2 browser - don't forget you can save your favourite servers using the 'Make Favourite' button) who bring teamwork and camerderie to the game. They have a number of US and UK servers and have just bought 2 new London based ones - play all flavours, ie vanilla, Special Forces, Euro Forces and City maps only - these servers are all open to the public btw, you don't need to be a clan member.
Heck if you like playing on there, and I did, you might even consider joining the OBC (you have to be over 25) or any of the hundreds of other clans out there - then it gets even better -
- online comms to chat to the 500+ other members
- preferrential server treatment
- fun and cameraderie
- and if you like playing comps and scrims, we play in house matches, external games vs other clans or just play for fun on our public servers - its a laid back mature clan. We even have comms channels for drunks
General tips
If you enjoy ranking up and want to improve your score, I'd suggest you play on city maps like Strike at Karkand, Mashtuur City, Sharqui Peninsula.
City fighting means a greater concentration of players (ie people for you to shoot!) and get your score up. The support classes ie Support and Medic are good ones to get your points on, as you can leave medic and ammo boxes around and get points without even killing anyone. Also sniper class on these maps have a field day taking out people with claymores.
Ideally you'll play all the classes - there pretty well balanced now and all fun in their own way.
Try and grab an apc if you can, obviously these give you some protection and allow you to take out a lot of people and improving your score.
The best advice I can give you, is always join a squad and preferably play on servers that have the VOIP enabled, though you may find the majority of public servers people just don't speak to each other very much and team play is not usually much in evidence - unfortunatley.
Cheers

The EA UK servers are generally the best to go for unless you've found a few particular favourites you like

Might try that one out... I must admit when you're in a squad that are working as a team, it makes the game twice as fun and you get twice the points.... they seem few and far between on most servers though
For a game based on teamwork and tactics Its funny how little teamwork and chat there is.
I remember being shouted at by a squad member 'Get out of my tank' 'Get Out' 'It is my tank' 'Get out'!
I quite enjoy the Engineer and support classes. I can't fly for toffee - can it be done without a joystick?
A question - How long do the placed mines last after you are killed?

I love flying , no good in planes but love the apache.
with mines, if you die then respawn as a engineer. and place more mines, you loose the ones you laid earlyer. I think you canonly lay time at any one time
Hi Koenig999 the mines will be around long enough for you to die, respawn and relay them. I agree with you there are a lot of idiots on the servers and many people seem to go out of their way to be rude and do their own thing. I suppose you have to think many of them are just kids
Civhead, you won't get the real benefit of comms and teamwork on any OBC ranked server, until your using dedicated comms like Ventrillo and your with a group of like minded mates - even on the OBC server, unless your playing with us, you won't get the real benefit and thats the same if you join any clan or gaming community - apologies I'm sounding like I'm recruiting which wasn't my intention.

Flying can be done without a joystick and most people use a mouse, although its easier to fly the chopper than the plane with it. Get yourself onto and empty server and practice a for a few hours - its the only way to really learn. I find if you set the mouse sensitivity super high for the choppers it also makes it quite a bit easier

No worries with being recruited, although I only get online a couple of times a week. I will have a look at the obc website, been playing on the obc vanilla server almost exclusively.
sorry for killing you a couple of times tongiht , my game name is S2Gonzo
ps. I'm still pretty crap, but nearly a fully corpral Woo for me.
Why not?
I know yours ( [OBC]Hawkhead and also [OBC]Big-Dewey ) so its only fair you know mine.
Funny really, I've been concentrating on playing the game so havent spent much time figuring out how to chat to other players, but several times I've actually jumped on the same tank as Dewy and been the turret gunner, or grabbed a lift into the action in the back of an armoured car hes been driving.
The OBC Vanillla server is a good laugh but I have noticed that some times it just seems to be home to tanks... played for a while last night and unless you were in a tank or armoured car you were instantly fubar. Quite alot of spawn point killers as well (just sitting out of flag range so as not to take the point, but gunning down anyone who spawned at the hold point), which I think is the cheapest way to get a kill score known to man. I have no issue with the tanks and aircraft being in the game, but when you get players who just drive around looking for foot soldiers and not actually trying to capture hold points etc, well, kinda makes you wish they stayed on the unreal servers
(I even watched one enemy tank run away from a flag when 2 friendly armoured cars turned up.... guess killing an equal is a bit much for these players).
Noticed that none of these guys had [OBC] monikers, so impressed enough there, but god are they annoying.

ATM I play a lot on a 24/7 Multi-Play non stop Wake Island server (16 players only) mainly as there's usually lots of flags changing hands & mucho opportunities to grab a tank (I can't fly atall). Sometimes the game is totally one sided & aircraft will just own the map....other times if the sides are balanced you can rack up a 100+ score (server time limit is 1 hour with full tickets!). Also virtually lag-free for me....most unlike muti-play servers in general
Might drop into the Old Bas***ds if I can find 'em

just to a search on OBC in the server window. You'll find them soon enough. thinking myself of finding a 24/7 city map server. The street fights usually end up more balanced and (as a result) a bit more fun.
