My kids have asked me to get a game for them fpr a PS2. What does "Solus" mean?

Your kids may be after one of the SingStar games (they sometimes have 'Solus' in the name). These games use microphones and the EyeToy.

Yep, it is one of the Singstar games, but when searching for them you can you a normal game or a "solus" one.

"solus" ie on its own.

The other packaging versions will include the microphone (or in the case of eye-toy games, the camera thingy).
