sorry for being a little dim but to get the HD resolution do i need a seperate HD lead from the 360 to the tv in addition with the standard leads, i have uprated the xbox to the 1080 format and changed the lead switch to HD mode but the picture doesn't improve on my old non HD tv.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings, but it sounds like you've done everything right...

... except you forgot to buy an HD telly!

Serious answer: The cable that comes standard with the Premium 360 is a combined component cable (Red, Green and Blue connectors) and composite cable (yellow connector) You won't see any additional increase in picture quality on a normal standard definition TV by what you are trying to do. Run either the component cable at 480p if your TV has component inputs, or go out and buy an RGB SCART cable. Or buy an HD ready TV and then you can use the component cable at 720p or 1080i

This sounds like the same TV I've got - picture quality is superb in my opinion, CoD2 and PGR3 were so far removed from the standard TV's resolution.

I presume you've gone through the TV's setup and selected the third external source to accept a HD signal(hit the "source" button three time, should pass through Ext1, Ext2, then on to a third with a user definable name). It was a bit fiddly when I was setting mine up, so I'll look through the menus when I get home from work if you're still having problems.

Just wondering, do people prefer component HD over VGA?

I'm running my 360 at the panels native res over VGA and the quality is fantastic. My TV is a Toshiba 32wl56 and it doesn't have component in for some reason.

For those who are not technical when it comes to TV electrics, what does that(in bold) mean?

As I have the same TV as you, and would like the best possible picture on my 360. I am currently using the 3 connections on the left hand side of the TV, right under the round shaped S-VIDEO connection.

Thanks

It means the number of pixels in the signal (coming from the 360) matches the number of pixels in the display (e.g. 1280x1024), this stops the set from scaling the image and results in a perfectly crisp image. Also in theory VGA is better than HD for most sets since VGA uses the RGB colourspace which maps better to the hardware and display. HD is good enough by itself though.

Don't know if you have it working but when i got my 360 i spent an hour trying to figure out why it wasn't running in HD. I had changed all settings on my TV i had changed loads of things on the 360 and then i decided to read the manual. There it told me that on the cable itself there was a little switch to turn from standard to HD. Doh! still i got there in the end.

What ^^^ said. Best illustrated by running an LCD monitor in 800x600 or 640x480 and you'll probably see some lines may be 2 pixels wide rather than one and some text may look a bit strange.

Apparently the Toshiba can accept component over VGA but I found a JoyTech 360 VGA cable works brilliantly especially with my 360 as a Media Center extender.

If so, be sure to connect the red, green and blue jacks to the tv.
