Sony attmept to kill of the Gran Turismo franchise
Discussion
Not by cancelling it or anything, but through utter cynicism. We all know that the PS3 is going to be expensive - about $600 over here in the US, they'll probably try and rape the British consumer for more. But that won't be the end of it.
First off, GT5 is coming out until 2008, and if that's the date that PD have given us, you can add two and a bit just to be sure. They couldn't ship a game on time if their lives depended on it. I'm still waiting for GT Mobile, the only reason I agreed with my wife's idea to buy a PSP.
In the meantime, they will release GT:HD. Same shit AI, same tracks, better graphics, and 12 cars on track. Oh, and online play. Except you don't get any cars or tracks to play online with, you have to buy them from Sony, with real money..
GT:HD Premium will be more expensive and come with 30 cars and two tracks. To unlock all the content in the game would cost over $600, making it more expensive than the console!
How come Microsoft and Turn 10 can get Forza II out of the door ontime, with proper network play support, *and* a full complement of cars and tracks, yet PD have to resort to this?
I was one of PD's biggest fans. I bought my original PS after playing GT at a friend's, and since then I've bought every one when they've been released (usually 6 months to a year after they originally promised the game would ship). No more. Forza has better AI, better physics, more real world tracks, a Porsche and Ferrari license, and it's out next month.
The King is dead, long live the King!

Players can purchase cars for ¥50-100 (about $0.45 to $0.85) and courses for ¥200-500 ($1.70 to $4.30). Online race events are defined by the players themselves, and can be held at any time. Initially, over 750 cars and 50 tracks will be made available, with additional releases to come over time. There are also plans for "limited edition" car and track downloads, which will likely be priced higher.

You info is a bit confussed
So far everything i've read about GT:HD Premium has me looking forward to it.
So far everything i've read about GT:HD Premium has me looking forward to it.
So Sony isn't charging for individual cars and tracks in GT:HD? Which is going to be a $70 version of a game I already own, complete with shit AI?
There are three different games
2006 GT:HD Classic - (GT4 in high detail with online) - you have to pay for individual cars + tracks, available at launch.
2007 GT:HD Premium - (think "GT5 prologue"
- a game where everything comes on the disk and they're aiming to include damage. 2008 GT5 - the proper sequel.

GT:HD Premium comes with 30 cars and 2 tracks for online play - you still have to buy all the other content.
And I'm sorry but I'm not optimistic that we'll see GT5 in 2008. GT3 was a year late, GT4 was more than a year late, and GT Mobile, which should be a straight port to the PSP, is almost two years late and still no sign of it.
Plus PD have an increasing habit of not delivering what they promise. Drag racing was taken out of GT3, online play was promised for GT4, and frankly, the AI in GT4 is pathetic, especially when compared to Forza, and there won't be any changes to that in GT:HD.

Don't worry, I share your unoptimistic viewpoint of Polyphony Digital. I'm 100% sure that they'll miss their targets and forget to include crucial elements... as long as I have online, I'll be happy.

You should seriously think about Forza II and an Xbox 360 then.
There currently seems to be a lot of confussion about this with things being re-written all the time, but my understanding is that GT: HD Classic and GT Premium would ship together in one package called Gran Turismo HD which would not be full price (fingers crossed
EDIT: maybe not Play already have it listed for £50
).
GT Premium would be like prologue was, bassically a preview of what's to come in 2008, with 30 cars and 2 tracks. It will feature limited future downloads (another 2 tracks and 30 more cars?), but will be limited to arcade and time trial modes, maybe online at a later date.
GT Classic will be use GT4 assetts (remember that most of the original models created from the photographs and scans are much higher quality than even GT5 will display) and tracks but will feature full online play (so who cares about AI?):
You will start with a limited or empty online garage and will have to buy your cars and tracks.
The preview images show Ferarri's
however i'm not sure if that is for Premium or both

First off, I linked to a reputable source concerning the way the game is to be marketed.
but will feature full online play (so who cares about AI?):
Online play, yes. But since you'll have to shell out a quid for each car you want, and maybe a fiver for each track, you'll end up paying £400 by the time you're done.
that noise.

I mean, the XBOX360 is going to get some storming games shortly and with the whole XBOXLive bit, I am sure it will be a real challenge to the GT franchise.
Now, if we didnt have a choice then fine - complain away - but since we do I dont see why you are getting so worked up about it. Call me stupid, but its just a game....
apparently there were at least 2 models shown.

Ferrari's chief engineer has said that the GT:HD model was the best CGI model of their cars that they've ever seen.
They hope to add more cars from the Ferrari line up, including older models, but won't be including Formula 1 models.
