NEED HELP - quake 4 isn't working
Discussion
Have you got the US or international version of your graphics drivers?
I think my brother had an issue with Q4 and it was because he had downloaded the US driver pack (as it was smaller) and the european version of the game refused to play. or at least I think it was q4...
might be worth trying

Firewall shouldn't stop the game from cranking up; it'd just run in its "no internet" mode.
Sounds maybe driverish. Either that or DirectX needs a good kicking.
Top of head, try reinstalling both; as far as I can tell Mankysoft had two versions of DirectX 9.0c floating around at one point. Super eh?

Is your graphics card supported?
Have you googled for problems with Quake 4 with your PC's configuration?
A quick generic google returns things like this:
www.sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?t=275875
There are also some suggestions on the boards that Anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware applications can cause problems. It may be worth unplugging your pc from the internet and disabling all of them if you have them.
Anyway your best bet would be to google your pc's config/graphics card with quake 4 in the search to see if it returns any common problems.

Quake 4's balls anyway. It's not for nothing the international FPS shooter competitions have gone back to Quake 3 [/devil's advocate]
Actually, Quake 3 Arena was principally designed for multiplayer deathmatch, Quake 4 was designed as a single player FPS thus has a rather weak multiplayer setup.
Also consider the fact that most of these competitions and LAN games are 'bring your own' as far as equipment goes. Bringing something light and not top-end in case of theft/transport damage is preferable; it's also why things like Dell's XPS range of laptops are going down a storm.... they're portable.
Quake 4 does freeze up if it isn't allowed through the firewall (if an internet connection is there, if you are using zone alarm put it in game mode) - I also had to download the patch to get it working on my machine (Radeon 9700 graphics card).
Runs pretty good on my laptop though only at 800x600.

seems it just doesn't want to work, what other fps games should i waste my money on
Like I said call the support number i don't think it's like a £1/min or anything and I'm sure they'll have you blasting the strog (or whatever they're called) in no time.
BTW I quite enjoyed the single player part of the game (until my friend asked for it back )

Later patches are no-cd....
