Nintendo DS - Ten thumbs up!!
Discussion
So I walked into a shop the other day and in a moment of insanity stumped up for a DS Lite for myself. I always figured Nintendo units as mainly for kids, with the processing capabilities and limited buttons on the gameboys being the determining factors. Pick-up-and-play games, if you will.
Oh boy was I wrong.
Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious, but it is incredibly innovative and is a breath of fresh air to portable gaming. For so long we've been raised on a diet of a gamepad being our only input that the inclusion of a touch screen on the DS is sheer genius!
Just yesterday I was playing a game that required you to use the touch screen to aim a blowpipe to shoot down falling objects, but the "trigger" which actually made you blow wasn't a button or a tap on the touchscreen - you physically had to blow. I found myself laughing out loud when doing this as never before had a physical action apart from the movements of my fingers actually triggered input on the game.
And some of the games are absolutely bonkers! Think Badger Badger Badger and you just about get the idea.
I always considered the PSP the more "mature" machine. You know what? I sold it after getting the DS. It's Nintendo all the way for me. Nintendo is to Sony as Apple is to Microsoft - genius and innovation vs more graphics power and formulaic gaming.
To those of you who have yet to try out a DS, I thoroughly recommend it. It really is amazing, and perfect for us young-at-heart grownups.
Oh, and the only English version of FF3 ever produced is out for the DS, in full 3D glory!

My son wants a DS for Christmas, he actually wanted one last year, but I wanted a PSP so managed to change his mind.
He's after a standard DS in blue with the nintendoz, but I'll be buggered if I can find any other than on eBay. Do they still make them or is everyone only stocking the DS Lite? I've seen plenty of them listed on websites such as Argos, HMV, Woolworths, Play.com, Debenhams etc..... but all of them are out of stock.

It's true, the DS is ace!
I didn't bother about it when it first came out, because I'd always assumed Nintendo stuff would be weird and Japanese. Plus I'm a total brand-slave and hadn't heard of any of the games.
But I had a go on my mate's DS a while back and it's quality, I played this thing where you blow bubbles by blowing on the mic, insanity!! Plus the golf game where you run the stylus over the screen to make the swing, classic!

Get the Lite instead - seriously! It's smaller, lighter, has better battery life, looks better but most importantly has a VASTLY superior screen.

Not really much difference, apart from the fact that the Xtreme is Slot type, rather than cartdridge type.
There is one big caveat with the slot-based solutions - you can't play GBA games on them. At least with the Supercard you can.
Also some may find 4Gbit a bit too small - you can only store about 10-15 games on it, which is probably fine for most, but I like a good variety and walk around with 50 in my pocket on my 16Gbit Supercard Lite.
