Modern PC equivalent of Settlers ???

As the title really. Can anyone recommend modern equivalent games of Settlers 1/2/3/4 ??? For the PC.

I am guessing Age of Empires? Any alternatives??

Tough question, unfortunately they just don't make 'em like they used to!

I've looked for a similar modern game, but there isn't one that can touch the charm of Settlers (or Die Siedler as it's also known ). I'm still on Settlers 4 for single player and Settlers 3 for LAN with my mates! (S4 doesn't like many human vs. many AI).

Age of Empires is good but it's more war focused, less economic management. There's a new Settlers out (Age of Kings IIRC), but it looks a little as though it's big on graphics, small on gameplay, as is the fashion these days.

As an aside, have you every tried Transport Tycoon? Released in 1993, it's still my favourite game. Like Sim City, but way better. There's an open-source version available now called OpenTTD that fixes the shortcomings of the original and is thus gaming nirvana (for me at least!).

Came out last year originally. My sister has been obsessed with this game ever since I showed her the first one on my Amiga years ago!

Settlers 10 anniversary edition is out but I've only seen it in 'Game'.
