Some good news re. the PS3
Discussion
INFO GATHERED FROM LONDON’S www.threespeech.com event with Phil Harrisson (December 12th 2006)
Playstation 3 european launch within the first 2 weeks of March 2007, as explained to me, Sony’s financial year ends on the 3rd week of March and therefore they want to launch before the next finanacial year begins. Judging that UK consoles always release on a friday expect the european launch on either the 2nd or 9th of March. Though a strong hint was that they are hoping to drop the playstation 3 on the 3rd day of the 3rd month (march 3rd).
On the same day as playstation 3’s euro launch SCE are to distribute there march firmware update with features including:
multi-tasking (included will be audio/video conferencing while browsing the xmb and its features/ gameplay).
new xmb display options
new animations for audio playback.
new photo album options.
playstation store auto ressume
psp remote play advanced access option (so that you can have access to your ps3’s content anywhere that has a internet connection)
Firmware will be constantly updated, with the view of a tv tuner and tivo like service to be available in the 3rd quater of 2007.
Also it is hoped that the same week as the euopean launch of the system will also see the worldwide launch of the ps3’s HDip Camera (specifications to be announced at a later date). In terms of other accessories, Sony dont see it as a necesity to manufacture playstation branded headsets, keyboards or mice, as put to me by Jonathun of SCE’s threespeech.com ‘Third party companies can offer these accessories to the consumer at a price which SCE could not compete’.
A extension to the Sony online store will also make its debut in march. Titled ‘Sing Store’, PS3 owners will be able to purchase songs for there ‘Sing Star’ kareoke programme from a slew of artists and will also be given the option to view the songs purchased as music videos via the video playback option within the xmb.
In terms of the european online store, while still being extremley vague, a spokesman for SCE europe was able to explain that Sony would have no defense if they were to charge the european consumer more than in other regions as there are no extra costs on digital distribution as apposed to a product with packaging etc. So expect a $15.00 download to cost people in the UK around £6.50.
other notes-
PS3 will be sold at £425 or lower, meaning we could have it cheaper then the previousley stated price.
Dont expect to see 20GB models available in europe.
No VGA cables to be released.
No plans to make RSX available to Linux OS, due to security issues.
A service to reserve your playstation online id will be up and running this weekend or next.
Sony make a much smaller loss on European PS3’s, so expect production to be diverted there, if needed.

Is that official, Doesn't read very well!
£425 = 2 x 360's!
Is that official, Doesn't read very well!
£425 = 2 x 360's!
Its from an interview with phil harrison - head of scee
PS3 £425 = console with 60gig hdd, wireless controller with cable to charge it with and built in battery, free online service and wifi.
memory card adapter £10-15 extra
PS3 Games: £50 (according to amazon)
X360 Core pack £200 = console, wired controller,
hdd £80,
xbox live gold £35,
wifi adaptor £55
X360 Premium pack £270 = console with 20gb hdd, headset, wireless controller and 3 months of xbox live gold free.
further xbox live £35,
cable to charge controller
X360 games: £30-£45
2x X360 does not equal PS3
Edit: Ps3 will also have a tv tuner and tivo functionality as stated in article.

Albeit two very useless 360s...
Not useless the the millions of people already playing X360.. but given how the PS3 games are comparing to the X360 games, your comment would equate to two useless 360s for the price of one even more useless PS3.
Couldn't have said it better my self!!
And say the PS3 does lower to £350, The 360 will still be half the price, and still better!
Oh, and you can actually buy a 360, I'm still to be convinced the PS3 exists!!
The core may well be sub £199 but the point I was making as someone else has rightly pointed out is that it's a cheap gimmick by microsoft to sell it to people who think that the £200 is all they need to pay.
You will need a memory unit or a hard drive to play most games, you will also need better cables if you have a hi-def TV, you'll also need to fork out for xbox live and if you want to get connected wirelessly you will need a wireless adaptor for it, add all those things up and it's a fair bit more than £200 and all of those things the PS3 will do right out of the box.

The PS3 requires better cables too (only ships with composite), and wireless gaming is overrated.. for starters it has lower bandwidth, is more laggy, and if you have hardwire connection then why pay for a device that has wireless.. makes sense to bolt on things to a modular device rather than pay extra for a loaded machine with bits you don't want.. which is how the PC did so well.

Ok... But the main crux of my argument is still there, one PS3 does not equal the price of 2 fully functioning 360s whichever way you look at it. There's also the fact that you get a blu-ray player thrown in as standard on the PS3 (and I don't want to get drawn into another which next-gen medium is best debate again) but you have to pay another £130 on top of the 360 to get HD-DVD functionality.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the PS3 per se (I've already had one).. but we're comparing a device that you can buy with one that you cannot for a good few months yet (officially).. One that comes fully loaded with bits and bobs and one that is barebones but can be built up..
As mentioned above, I expect Microsoft to start discouting the X360 when the PS3 is launched, and I wouldn't be surprised to see them throwing in the HD-DVD drive as a bundle (again, it's first to market with the HD-DVD being available already). Only then will we have a good back to back comparison.
Until then, Sony need to come out with a killer app for the PS3.. because the current crop of games don't justify buying one over a X360.. (and if you were in the market for a games machine you'd already have an X360).. The trouble is, there's nothing on the horizon for the PS3 that shows any hope, not even the GTurismo licence.. which is why I sold my PS3 (aka The Doorstop)

I'd definitely agree with you on the games front, they've dropped the ball there in a big way, only reason I shall be getting one will be MGS4 as that's the only PS3 exclusive game that has impressed me in any way so far (ok, i'm just a Metal Gear addict..) and it's not looking like it will be an early release title, so maybe the price will go down a bit more before that arrives.
I have an X360 core with just a memory card, and two controllers (both wired) and i in no way feel like i'm losing out to the premium. I have no desire to download demos etc, just want to play games. Lots of added crap doesn't make it better. The X360 is good enough to stand alone without it if need be.
Comparing the (my) xbox 360 premium which came with hidef component cable and remote to the PS3 means I'd have to buy another cable and the remote they've not even released as yet. IMO nto shipping a decent cable is very poor.
No matter what way you skin this chicken the 360 works out at far better value for money, even if you end up with the HD-DVD addon.
TV tuner and tivo functionality wont be free I bet & prolly require linux install etc
