Whats all the fuss - Gears of War
Discussion
I am going to be getting a Xbox 360 in the new year when Forza 2 comes out. The decision to buy was concreted by the news the Command Conquer 3 is also coming out on the system.
My only question is what is all the hype about Gears of War? I know the topic title suggests that I am negative, far from it. I am just uneducated.
What makes GoW so good? Why is most of the world going buts over this game and why is it the only game in my local Tesco to have been sold out for months?
Just thought you may be able to get me excited about another title on this wonderful system.
Any other recommendations? – I am a big tiger woods fan and have 2007 for the PSP has anyone got this for their system?

When it boils down to it, it is just a very pretty game full of guns,
alien type creatures and a "let's rock!" approach to killing mostly.
The basic system it uses of shoot, duck, roll, advance isn't new.
There was a PS2 game called Killswitch that did much the same.
Don't expect to go wandering and exploring around vast open areas either,
you are very much on rails so to speak. However, it takes the above concepts to
a whole new level. You can't help but get wrapped up in the beauty of it all as you
grunt your way through the levels kicking arse.
The multiplayer side of things has more appeal to many than the rather short
single player game i would think. It's a game that allows you to adopt a Leroy Jenkins
(go google) approach to killing as well as a more tactical approach when playing with
your squad online if you wish. You can creep about and chainsaw the enemy, snipe from a
distance, throw grenades over the top of the obstacle you are cowering behind, lob smoke
to cover you as you heal downed team members and pop in and out of cover taking pot shots
with ease once you are used to the controls.
In a nut shell, it looks great, moves superbly, sounds fantastic and demonstrates not only
what is good about current next gen gaming, but also what we can expect in the future.
As for other games, it depends what you enjoy really.
I have spent months playing Fight Night 3.Dead Rising is great for a laugh if you have always
wanted to crack the skulls of a thousand zombies in a shopping mall.
Call of Duty 3 adds some WW2 bells and whistles to the series.
Splinter Cell will make you feel like Tom Cruise in his M.I films if that's your bag.
PGR3 and Test Drive Unlimited should appeal if you like spanking around in hot machines with
Test Drive offering the chance to just drive on normal roads around a vast island paradise.
Rainbow six Vegas is a superb and realistic shooter, one which also allows the run/duck/cover/shoot
approach to wiping out criminals, as does Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
Hitman Bloodmoney is worth a look if you liked the series and have yet to play it on anything else.
Table Tennis is a cheap and cheerful fun little game.Kameo is an entertaining fantasy romp.
Top Spin 2 will cater for any tennis needs...
..i will shut up now i think

You didn't mention the co-op version of the game! This is mucho fun, hook up via X-box live to a friend, who can jump in and out (or you can) to any single player game going on. Added to this the use of the mic to tell your team-mate of bad guys behind him/where you're going etc, and it adds a whole new dimension. I don't really rate the multiplayer team deathmatch though - only 8 players, distinctly average experience (although I have been spoilt by multiplayer PC games like CS:S, The Ship, BF2, CoD3 etc etc.)

It's a little more than "just a pretty shooter" though.
It's certainly the first thing I've played that has you *really* interacting with your environment. I've been playing it along with CoD3, and CoD3 just feels a bit 2 dimentional after Gears.

It does very little that hasn't been done before though and in many respects a lot less than some other games.Duck behind something, jump over something, roll around something.
It's all been done to a degree.
I would hate for someone to buy it for example because they assume the enviroment interaction is better than say splinter cell, Vegas, Black, killswitch, hitman, half life 2, Bond, the 1980's arcade game Cabal...
It is all wrapped up in a lovely next gen package though and is very highly polished with some nice touches.
Personaly though i enjoy it because it looks so nice and runs so well, ducking behind cars and walls etc is not what kept me interested.
Have to agree, it is NOTHING special.......... active reload is annoying, movement controls (A buton)are sh1te, short SP, very linear play..........
Except............. it looks really good, chainsaw on the gun is fun if you can get close enough, MP 4 vs 4 is short and intense..............

It's different in the fact once you die in multiplayer you don't respawn and keep on going, you're out for the round, so more delicate tactics are needed sometimes. Either that or run in with a shotgun and hope for the best, it is pretty, but there is a edge to the game that does make it the platinum seller it is which is hard to explain. Just get it and play with PH online and you'll have some fun. It's only annoying when you get cained by a person with a squeeky voice and 1992 after their username.

Yes I used to have it, before I sold my White PSP for 60 quid with 3 games, I personally found it an atrotious game, bad graphics and gameplay, everything. On the PS2 though it is good.
I have just got myself an XBox360 at last and I have been playing Gears of War. So far it has not lived up to the hype and I prefer Halo.
For a number of reasons
1. Limited range of weapons, and no alien ones.
2. Dark, drab battlefields.
3. Hasn't got the free ranging feel of Halo, where you could grap vehicles/planes and roam around.
4. Lack of First person persepective.
It is fun playing as part of squad and I can see how tactics play a more important role, but the King has not been deposed.
I have only played the single player game so far, maybe the exeprince of multi-player would change my mind.

Exactly like counterstrike has been doing for about a hundred years then
Is counter strike ever going to be available for the 360?

I felt the same when I bought GoW but if you stick with it, it becomes a lot better...
Acts 3, 4 and (to an extent) 5 are bloody amazing!!

If they could produce Cs in HD it would be truely brillaint... but u would need to use a mouse and keyboard as its a much more precise game, unlike GoW...
As it happens i love GoW, just for the multiplayer really the single/Co-op mode is good but u need to play it in Insane to really get becoming challenging
As people have said its a bit of a no brainer... but still a great laugh
