want a game (pc) for online racing
Discussion
Quick over view. Both GTR2 and rFactor use the same games engine developed by ISI (who develop and market rFactor) GTR" use v1.5 of the GMotor2 engine, rFactor uses V2. So both games are very similar, except for me rFactor runs better than GTR2 for me, I get higher frames per second. This might be because Simbin the people who do GTR2 have added their own code to some parts of their game.
However my PC is a 2 Ghz AMD CPU with 1GBM ram and I run an NVidia 7800GS 512MB gfx card. With everything on full in the video options in rFactor I get (depending on the track) 40-80fps. On GTR2 I get 30-60fps.
In my experience of GTR, GTL, GTR2 and rFactor, rFactors online code is much tougher and less prone to problems. Plus you can add a lot (and I mean a lot) of free add-on tracks, cars and series. See here - www.rfactorcentral.com/
If you even want the GTR2 cars someone has kindly converted them to rFactor so you can run them on rFactor if you want with better net code, besides which the Le Mans series cars (all the GT cars and the LMP1 & LMP2 prototypes) will be making an appearance on rFactor. See NAGT mod and LMS mod on the above link, WIP section.

all sounds good
is it the sort of game where cars like the ones you race online take time to be unlocked or is everything pretty much open at the start?
And looking at FWDs folders in the screenshot on the mods thread, wot size hard drives do you guys have?

Either they have an uninstall exe somewhere but what I tend to do is (since I keep all the download ZIP and RAR files on a backup DVD) I look at the files they install.
However here's what to look for and remove.
RFM folder - normally 3 or 4 files, these are the loading files for the mod, intro, menu structure, background menu image etc..
Talent folder - only remove if there a specific folder named after the mod
Vehicles folder - obvious
Sounds - same as the vehicles folder
Helmets - same as above
Music - normally holding some MP3, you can remove these anyway as they only play if you have music option on during the menu, these are also a pain in the arse if you extract any reply to a video clip as they play over the engine noise.
UIData folder - only if there's a folder specifically for the mod.
Leave the CCH file in your userdata folder, it's very small and if you reinstall the mod you'll keep all your settings.

normally the mod comes in a zip or rar file which has the same directory structure as your rfactor folder... (eg the top folder is often "gamedata"
. You need to extract the files into the "base" rfactor directory (eg C:Program Files
Factor) in that case. Tracks often just come in a folder called "Brands" or "nordschleife". These need to be extracted to C:Program Files
Factorgamedatalocations
hope that helps.
none of the readmes really tell you how to do it and I haven't seen a guide anywhere of how to install stuff, seems a bit silly to me.

Exactly, I can't see how anyone can have any problem installing a mod and not having it work immediately. No one needs to manually move individual folders to install a mod.
Some people pack the files with different top folders, but what ever the first folder is in the ZIP/RAR file point the extraction to the folder above it.
