xbox360 scratching discs?
Discussion
Okay, I had to take my original GoW back as i noticed it had circular scratches on it causing a 'disc unreadable' at the same point in the single player game.
Just had the error on multiplayer, had a look at the disc and it had 'scuffs' which didn't brush off in a similar fashion..
Is my xbox scratching my discs? is there anything I can do about it?

Mine is upright, no probs here, but you are not alone.Just go google, you will find plenty of people with the exact same problem.
Moving the unit in any way while the disc is in motion can scuff the discs real bad btw.In fact i think the later units come with a warning on them now and you have to remove the sticker to use the machine. If you have moved it at all with the disc in motion, then that may be your problem. If you have never moved it (or anyone else) then you may just have a system that has a problem.

when you say 'moved it with a disc in' - do you mean that damaged the disc in at the time, or could cause damage to subsequent discs?
I may have slid it backwards (switched off) with a disc in the drive once... but that was another game ages ago..
The most common story (there are even videos of it) is that any movement at all while the unit is on and the disc is spinning 'can' mess up that disc or scratch it real bad.
Supposedly it hits the laser or something. What the after effects of that would be to other discs i couldn't say.
Other tales tell of people getting non circular scratches while others are perfectly round. In another thread i read about someone who discovered a type of melted white gunk on his disc so thought maybe something had melted inside and was now hitting and scratching the discs.
One guy was even told by MS to use compressed air to blow out the system when he called to say his discs were getting scratched!
Oddly enough, gears of war seems to suffer quite a lot with scratches when you hunt around.Assuming though that this is because so many people have been playing that triple platinum title, maybe that means that prolonged use has caused issues? Or, maybe it just means that lots of machines are defective or have been moved.
If you have deffo not moved the machine with GOW inside and the machine on then you may need to look into getting that machine replaced i would think.
Another odd thing is that some units seem to scratch game discs but not music cd's etc.
Maybe they just used cheaply designed drives and as with the lockups etc that people suffer, it's just luck of the draw if you suffer or not.

the unit hasnt been moved when its switched on.
Couldnt find anything on google about the upright scratch, only if you turn it from standing to lying down while switched on - which is kinda understandable!

Just to clarify, 360's can easily destroy discs if you start to move them around with discs spinning, even laying it down can be enough.
This is well known about.
The problem is, lots of people never ever move them and STILL have had discs scratched. The trouble is, all the MS fanboys just keep screaming at them that it is user error, just as they did for a year about the heat issues and lockups.
It's not always user error, there is every chance your machine has developed the same problem that many other peoples have sadly :/

Unfortunately CD's and DVD's get scratched by players. All it takes is the optics to raise just a little bit to much and... dust or defects in the tray/spinning mechanism can also cause the disk to jitter and become scratched.
To be honest, it's why so many PC gamers use ISO + Daemon Tools / No-CD cracks and the like so that they're original disks don't get scratched to buggery. Doesn't much help a console gamer I admit, but at least you can take some solstice in the fact that drives scratching disks isn't new and affects all formats.
