Which do you prefer. rFactor or GTR2 ?

looks a bit nicer too.
The look: GTR2 uses fogging on the tracks, something rFactor can do also and does on some new tracks like some of the 1979mod tracks. You can change any track to do the same but you might get miss-matches. Although I often question why does the track look foggy when it's bathed in bright sunshine. Cockpits are good in GTR2 so they should they have been produced by a paid professional development crew but if you try an rFactor mod that has been done to the same level by unpaid developers who don't have the resources and manpower to spend as much time as they would like on them you will get the same effect. There are some out now but wait for Virtua-LM
Basically GTR2 = rFactor. There is no difference.
The feel: You have almost an infinite range of setting up for both games, so both can feel exactly the same. They just keep those settings in different places although the PLR file is the first point of call for tweaks.
The only differences are that Simbin who bought the rFactor engine (Gmotor) from ISI have added rain (crap) wet reflections (nice but FPS hungry) and who ever races online in the rain, I never have, no one here ever wanted to and I've only ever done one race in the dark via PH races. And their own netcode (historically crap). ISI however continue to update their GMotor powered rFactor (like today) with new content which GTR2 hasn't got. If GTR2 is updated it gets updated by Simbin.
I don't go along with the fanboys from either side who will always think theirs is the best because basically they are both the same. It's like buying a new Ford Mondeo. Is it a better car in blue or red?
I've got GTR, GTL, GTR2 and Race:WTCC but I prefer rFactor

I havent had a chance to fiddle with rFactor yet, so I dont even know what the PLR file is !
All Gmotor games (all those I listed above) have a PLR file (player file) you will find it in your userdata-"playername" folder, where all the CCH files are. All editable except RACE which for some reason wuite baffling they have encrypted it
Open it using notepad and just have a look at it (maybe make a quick copy just in case and move the copy to another folder for saftey).
It contains all of the settings that you make within the game, plus many more that can adjusted. Settings for the level of detail you can see in your mirrors and these two below
Set this to "1"
Relative Fuel Strategy="0" // Show how much fuel to ADD, rather than how much TOTAL fuel to fill the tank up to.
If not if you pit and put fuel in it takes out what you have left, also you need this on if you do a long F1 1979 race in case you need to pit for tyres. Refuelling isn't allowed in the mod (rules) so if you pit it will take you fuel out and you'll be finished if you have changed this to "1".
And this one
Self In Cockpit Rearview="1" // add values for any that should be visible (0=none): 1=rear wing & wheels, 2=body & susp, 4=cockpit, 8=steering wheel (15=all)
Set to "1" it will show your rear wheels and rear wing in the mirrors in F1 racing games sometimes in others too if it's been set within the mod.

Fixed it for you
I tried it, i thought "ooohh, it has an old skool BMW in it"...
After an hour or so, i thought "..well, at least it has an old skool BMW in it"
Add/remove..
I prefer rfactor btw, especially with all the GTR2 cars installed into it
