I've just entered the world of GTR...
Discussion
and WOW! It's brilliant.
I have a pretty low spec PC (P4 2.4, 512mb Ram, Nvidia 256mb G/Card) so I decided to buy the original GTR (£6.99 from Game) instead of GTR2. The problem is that I am now desperate for the updated cars/circuits etc.
So, 2 questions for the GTR regulars...
1. Are there updates available for the original game that will add more current cars and tracks?
2. Would my PC be able to run GTR2 with any degree of detail and speed?
Thanks in advance.
Marcus

Hi, i'm in a similar position to you, with a similar spec pc. My mate whas lent me GTR 2 to see if it will run on mine, i'll try it tonight & let you know ! My PC is 768Mb Mem 256mb graphics card and a 2.5Ghz processer.
On another note, I downloaded the demo of Rfactor, and that ran quite smoothly, so may be worth checking out.

Marcus,
I've imstalled it and it does seem to be fairly ok - Not exactly mind blowing, but not paticularly jerky. It doesn't run as smoothly as the original GTR but its certainly playable. The car looks a little 'bouncy' on the replay though. Anyone any ideas why?

Thanks Mark.
The biggest problem I've always had if the PC is under powered is a delay between moving the controller and the car reacting. Are you getting that at all?
Cheers. The 'bouncing' is more like a pitching motion. I'm well aware that GT cars tend to bounce, but it almost looks like the car is on a centre pivot, and doesn't seem to react properly with the track. Had a similar problem with the original GTR demo, until I put the new graphics card in last weekend and it looks far better. (On a very tight budget, hence the poor graphics card!).
Marcus - Try the demo to see what you think. I don't think i'll buy it and i'm probably just going to get the original, which I know I can run on max setting. It looks far nicer than GTR 2 because at the moment i'm running it on low settings.

Will do. BTW Mark, how are you finding RFactor? Are you running it on the same spec PC?
RFactor runs very well on the same PC - The auto graphics settings help matters a fair bit, but i've upped some of the graphical niceties and it doesn't unduly affect it. Quite impressed - There is a frame rate buffer thingy (technical term ;-)) which you can set to a specific level. If the frame rate drops below this it adjusts the graphical settings to ensure it carries on running smoothly. Well recommended. Spent last night sorting out mods for it.
Decided to order the original GTR due to possible smoothness issues on GTR 2. I believe there is a Le Mans mod for the full sportscars (eg Audi R8). Does anyone know where i can find it? Thanks.
Also ordered GTL, in the hope it will run properly! Fingers crossed. Is it based on the original GTR engine?

You'll need to register, it's german but the way to do it is clear.

Upgraded engine, you might need to run it on DX7 mode for it to run smoothly if you system can't handle DX8 or DX9 modes in the config.

I finally downloaded the GTR2 demo last night and was pleasantly surprised by how well it runs on my modest spec PC. I found it much easier than GTR1 also.
Now I've just got to convince the mrs that I need to spend £200 on a Logitech G25 and £25 on the full game.

I would try RFactor too - we've all moved from GTR/GTL/GTR2 to RFactor, and found it much more realistic and fun.
Ignore the likes of me moaning about how hard it is or how many mods there are, thats just because we'e crap.
Try it, its honestly rather good, and plays better on weaker machines.

Thanks Neil, I have heard a fair bit about rFactor and it does sound very impressive.
Do you know if there is a free demo to download anywhere?
