It is my birthday very soon and I was hoping to get some opinions from Xbox 360 owners on here about whether an X360 is the better purchase over a PS3? Even though the latter isn't yet out here in the UK.

I'm tempted to get a 360 but the thing that stops me is that there is little extending content available for games. For example - Oblivion. Awesome game, Morrowind was unreal and this is a huge improvement. The PC version has loads and loads of addons that can make the lasting appeal be forever, but the Xbox version lacks mods, which also means that some annoying features in these games may never get fixed. How much content is available on Xbox Live in the form of mods etc?

What else should I know? Any new hardware revisions coming up?
Thanks

Add-on packs - quite a lot but not homebrew.
Updates (bug fixes, new features) - less but not uncommon.
Hardware revisions - recently got a new quieter drive. IPTV version looks like it's coming to the states this year, with 100gb HDD and HDMI, but whether some of its features will filter down to premium or core editions, and what pal territories get, who knows.

It it better than a PS3? - listen to the song.

That song is quite catchy....

I am extremely happy with my 360 and don't really see that the PS3 will add anything extra to make me want to change. A lot of the exclusive titles will be on the 360 and most of the PS's exclusives are not exclusive any more. Lots of games will be ports of 360/pc games so probably won't be any better than the 360 versions.

On the media side, the 360 is great if you connect it to a Media Center or Vista pc to watch your pictures, tv or music and is an integrated solution.

I think that Sony have dropped the ball with this one. If the PS3 had bene released at the same time as the 360 then I guess it would be different as the PS3 is technically better but the games will only be at the 1st gen while the 360's is on the 2nd gen which I think evens up the hardware differences.

PS, you can get a 360 premium at Macro for £200 now.

How's your budget? The 360 seems to be a little more modular than the PS3, apart from the huge waiting time for the PS3 that's one of the main reasons why I went the 360 route. I am not able to lump up the cash all at once for things like these, so the opportunityt o buy, say, the HD DVD drive at a later date, or a wireless headset etc works better for me.

I honsetly don't expect to see any massive differences in quality between the two formats, the 360 has a big lead ITO games released, but then Sony is now the world's largest In house developer (I think)and will be able to get games to market fairly promptly. Many external development companies will develop their games cross format I think, unless each brand thinks they're onto a real winner (GT series and Forza / GoW for example) and then the brands will pay an awful lot for exclusivity.

You pays your money obviously but at this stage I'd still be looking in Microsoft's direction. I loved my PSone but I prefer Forza 1 to GT so god alone knows what I'll think of the soon arriving Forza 2 with Force feedback, HALO is and will be fantastic, GoW is something else too.

My 2p anyway

The PS3 is getting force feedback and will be getting a rumble enabled sixaxis at a later date. PS3 also has some kind of iptv in the works as well, but we haven't heard anything since E3.

I don't really think the PS3 is going to be worth is price tag to be honest, I don't think your going to get anymore for your money compared to the 360.

I have had a 360 for just over a month now and I am very pleased with it, PGR3 is just too addictive.
As for games, later this year there is going to be some very good games coming out, Forza 2, Halo 3, Grand theft auto to name a few.

Personlly I would get the 360 and spend the extra cash on some games.

360 is the one to go for, Xbox live is vastly superior to Sony's efforts, and it doesn't look like a George foreman!
All the comparisons I have seen show very little difference between systems, and alot seem to show the 360 being superior, And I've always found PS pads uncomfortable, and the trigger buttons make driving games far better

Living in Japan means that I've had a PS3 for a couple of months, along with a handful of games such as Motorstorm, F1, Resistance, GT:HD demo and Virtua Fighter 5. The last time I turned the console on was about 3 weeks ago, lots of games do look pretty but I've became bored with them rather quickly as they seem lacking in features... my most played game is GT:HD demo, which cost nothing! Whereas, my 360 is whirring at least 3 or 4 times a week and the Microsoft game library keeps me happy... plus Forza2 is only about 8 weeks away!

Personally, I'd wait on your PS3. There are some stunning games in the pipeline, but it's going to be a longtime (late 2007-spring 2008) before the 'proper' games start being released. If you wait until then, I'm sure the price would have dropped significantly too.

Doesn't the fact that they're even giving any timescale for a price drop say it all?

I have had a PS1 & PS2. Didn't buy either when first released. Never see the point of doing that - Pay top price & only a handful of games to choose from.
I always wait until the machine is established, any bugs have been ironed out and there is a decent selection of games to choose from. And hopefully a price cut on the console too!
Have just bought a 360 myself a few weeks ago. My PS2 is almost six years old and for the reasons above will not be buying a PS3 yet.
The way I see it the 360 is now established and there are some excellent games available.
It will more than fill the gap for me until the PS3 becomes established.

Ok I'm going to get an Xbox and I'm going to get this package:

www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=3WSK&InMerch=1

However, the other thing that concerns me is that in my living room I have this [www.johnlewis.com/Audio+and+TV/Televisions/Televisions/LCD+TV/1284/230413890/Product.aspx ] TV, and in my parents bedroom they have this tv - http://uk.four.ebid.net/perl/auction. . Thing is, my mate who is clued up with electronics/IT and has a 360 himself says that my TV (the Sony one on the John Lewis link) will not be able to play HD ready games such as Gears of War because the Sony TV supports SXGA, which is 780p. 1080p is a resolution of 1900x1200 and thus GOW won't work below this resolution, so won't work on my Sony TV. Is this true? Am I screwed?

last thing sony wants is rumours of a price drop, even though they've already had one in Japan...

If you want to play games, then the 360 is where its at. Better cross lpatform games & the exclusives are great. Unless you HAVE to have some of the (limited) PS3 exclusives.

360 core is 180quid, thats 245 cheaper than the PS3, though I'd advise against getting the core.

If your in any way intrested in the linux/BR movie side of the PS3 that may be the right choice.

But the 360 is an excelent piece of games playing media extending kit.

As for rumble/force feedback, Sony/immersion have settled the law suit for this 'last gen' feature and I expect rumble to be adddd to PS3 controllers, but who knows.

That tv is hd ready for 720 res so you'll be fine. 1080 is 1900x1080 not 1900x1200. The 2 resolutions of HDTV are 720 and 1080, both come in interlaced or progressive. That tv will display HD 720 which will virtually look the same as 1080 on a 32 inch tv. At 720, games will look great and be hd.

Sounds like your mate really doesn't know what he's talking about at all.

Thirded. Tycho has it right. If you need further proof, I have a 32" LCD HD-ready tv, (resolution of 1366x768 - same as that 32" Bravia) and Gears of War works perfectly (and looks great) in 720p HD

Ok fair enough, that question is answered.

That Dabs bundle seems to be the best available on the net in terms of value for money. 3 games + controller for really only an extra £40.

Can I link my Xbox to my PC and stream songs from my PC to Xbox? Without storing the songs on the Xbox HD so they still originate from the PC's HD? This would be great. 20gb is not enough for my songs. If not, I assume I can connect my USB hard drive to the 360 and play songs off there, right?

It's still a shame about the lack of user-created content, but I guess this is good in a way as some user created content like mods are sometimes buggy and can ruin the game from a gameplay or technical point of view.

I believe the Xbox has just 512MB RAM? Doesn't this seem a bit underwhelming and even a bit of a bottleneck? I doubt this can be expanded, either.

I have a HD TV (as my last post stated), to enjoy games in HD, do I need to buy anything seperate?
