Should they have gone a step further and put the HD-DVD drive in as standard (and charged more?)

It's official - Microsoft has announced the black Xbox 360. Dubbed the Elite, the machine does indeed feature the rumoured HDMI port, 120GB hard drive and $480 price tag.
As expected, the unit will be offered alongside a stack of colour-coordinated accessories, most of which will work with existing 360s.
Unlike Sony, Microsoft has chosen to bundle its console with an HDMI cable. Thanks to recent system software updates, the Xbox 360 is capable of 1080p HD output, just like the PS3.
The Xbox 360 Elite goes on sale in the US on 29 April. There's no word yet on UK and European availability.

We had this debate before, most people beleive HD will win on this front mate.
Its got PORN on it (unlike GayRay).
Yes people still BUY it rather than download it.
Doesn't really seem worth it, since we can all get the new 120Gb drive at some point as well as HDMI (if you really need it).
Looks nice.

Are the existing XBox's going to upgradable to HDMI, or do we just have to junk our existing ones?
If so, will there be much of a difference between the RGB cable quaality or HDMI?

Not upgradable as it's also got new hardwear to enable proper 1080p high definition playback.
you want HDMI in your xbox, you will have to buy a new one.

the 120gb hdd will be sold seperately as will a black controller, battery and play and charge kit.
Not only does the current 360 not have HDMI, it doesnt even support full 1080p HD resolution. this new 360Elite solves obth of those problems.
Current thinking is that once the Elite has sold out (the black console is limited edition only) the changes to hardware will filter down and the white console premium spec will match the spec of the "elite" unit.

I thought the current XB360 is now capable of 1080p processing via component (due to a Firmware upgrade)

I happily stand corrected... although my information came from a Microsoft interview printed on an American gaming site (think it was gamespot? but for the life of me I can't find the link)
I'm not that far off on the 1080p thing though....

MYTH: The Xbox 360 can't handle 1080p.
Actually, it can, thanks to a recent downloadable update. Though Sony argues that the Xbox 360 can't handle true 1080p, this is a technical argument that's mostly splitting hairs. Generally speaking, Xbox 360 game designers will be able to code in true 1080p support for future games. Check out Sega's Virtua Tennis 3 as one key example of an upcoming Xbox 360 game that's rendered in "true" 1080p.
As for running existing games in 1080p on the Xbox 360, it's not so simple. Currently, selecting the 1080p option doesn't actually render the game in 1080p: it "cheats" by using the 360's analog scaler to blow up a normal 720p image to fill a 1080p display. This isn't the same thing, though it's still a nice option to have.

So the HDMI machine will be proper non upscaled 1080p as opposed to the software upscaled support for existing users with existing games. So I was kind of correct. The current xbox360 is not currently capable of a true 1080p, but it is capable of 1080p in software upscaling :P
The New Black 360 has nothing new over the existing one as far as rendering true 1080p.
Nearly all 360 games are rendered at 720p (some launch titles were less, for example 600p for PGR), But the XBox has a very good scaller which rescales the images to the res the user selects in the dashboard (if dashboard not 720p). Some games like Virtua Tennis are rendered at 1080p, so if 1080p is selected as an output are not scalled. However games at 1080p will be few and far between as the extra rendering and memory this requires.
The addition of HDMI to the Black 360 makes no difference to the above, neither does it contain any more processing power/ RAM/ Bandwidth/ etc. to render normal 720p games at 1080p (even if it could re-write the games 3D engine on the fly
)
EDIT: IMHO this is one of the best things about the 360 - it allows the games to run at different resolutions on different TV's without performance penalties (i.e. as the developers intended) that the PC and PS3 experience when upping the resolution.

No; because they should give consumers the choice.
In the future perhaps we might see two alternative XBox360 packages. Both with HDmi and 120GB hard drive, but one with an internal HD-DVD drive and one without.
