I assume at some point soon I'll stop resisting a PS3. Before GT comes out next year, what game should I get? I notice there are a couple of 1st person shooty games.. any of those any good? That one with the four-eyed skull looked ok on the box.

Really is nothing absolutely amazing on it at the moment, Resistance is the game you mentioned, it's good, but not a must-have title by any means. Hopefully come October there should be some awesome titles around for it, I still don't have any games for mine.

Motorstorm.

It's very, very good, and lots of fun. You can pick all different vehicles, and running over people on motorbikes online when you're in a lorry is really satisfying. Haha.

Resistance is not very good IMO. If I had the chance, I would not buy it again.

The GT HD demo could be considered half a game and the graphics are outstanding, possibly the best I've seen on any HD console. This has kept me entertained for a while so far... and its free

Via the PS3 network "store" which you can access directly through the console - all you need it an internet connection (wireless or wired).

As its technically a demo its free but its got 10 cars and two race modes - race and drift. Very addictive!

GT HD was going to be a full release but now they're concentrating on GT5 so this demo was released as a bridge between GT4 and GT5

Not just the UK store either, you can set-up different accounts for various countries and freely download demos, etc from them. At present I have a UK, USA and Hong Kong account (all you need is to find a postal address for each country and remember to not send mail to it), as they have differing content to the UK is worth it.

The nice thing is you can start a download running from one of these stores, switch user and it will continue to download in the background quite happily.

Edited to add - Oh and don't forget to use a .com e-mail address for it, as outside the UK .co.uk address's are invalid.

BTW - I have Resistance, Motorstorm, Ridge Racer 7 and GT HD, all of which are blinding fun.

Not wishing to stir up another hornets nest of abuse, but coming from a totally non-biases perspective (I own all 3 current gen consoles) you really would be better off with an Xbox 360 at the moment, especially if FPS games are your bag. Forza 2 will be out next month (whereas you could be waiting until you are old and grey for GT5) and PGR4 is out later this year, you only need to take a gander at the screenshots that have been released for it to see how it blows GT:HD into the weeds.

I'm likely to hang on as the PS3 will tick the HD DVD box too . Apparently its not too shabby as a BlueRay player (although I gather quite poor with regular DVD).

edited to say: hanging on best plan considering all the work on the house I still

Yeah the Blu-Ray playback is great on it, easily as good as the £700 models from other companies, the DVDs I've tried playing on it have all been out of sync, no matter how many times I stop the disc and try to get it to re-synchronise.

If you can, set the PS3 up to use Pal 50 and not Pal 60 as this often caused sync issues for DVD playback on the Xbox 360.

To be honest GT:HD is a good few months old now and little more than a large free demo, PGR4 is a full release and the screenshots on that link are not that great so its difficult to compare.

In regard to Forza 2 I have seen a good number of screenshots and I have to say I see little to separate it from GT:HD (in terms of visuals). What I would agree with is that currently the 360 has a much greater library of titles available (which is no big surprise at present), what tipped the balance for me was that the 360 will not utilise the increased storage capacity of the HD-DVD (www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=18977) for games. While not an issue at the present time, I honestly believe it may well become a factor in future, as the storage difference between a DVD-9 and a Blu-ray disc is massive. While this may not be an issue for linear games (multi-discs would solve this), for free-roaming games such as Just Cause and GTA in the future this could be an issue. I know I would not want to be swapping discs in a future GTA every time I moved from location to location or island to island.

Konami have already started to hint that the next MGS would not fit on a single DVD-9 at all, which would make a 360 version of it (which has not been confirmed or denied) either multi-disc release or a striped down version.

In addition I did want a hi-def player, as such the PS3 was not much difference in price to a similarly spec'ed 360, based on list prices if you look at a Premium 360 + HD-DVD + Wireless Adaptor (again something I personally would not be without - having no intention of re-location my router or running cable from my office to living room), the price difference is minimal to say the least.

These factor tipped the scales for me (but I fully acknowledge they will not be the same for everyone), have to say I've not regreted it yet, yes launch titles are limited, but then again what console has launched with a truly exceptional line-up. Motorstorm and Resistance are both solid launch titles (Motorstorm in particular shows what the system is capable of).

Both systems have advantages and disadvantages, and the two are currently much closer than is often accepted.

Gideon

Just been on play and the ps3 has been reduced. £399 for the console, hdmi cable and click blu-ray. Their 3 game bundle is now £499. Tempting.
