So with Forza 2, car availability is determined by territory (EU/USA/Asia). This continues through the game, apparently, but here is its impact on the cars that are initially available (from here - www.forzacentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21418 ):

I will stick with EU, as I suspect later on it will be easier to get cars I am more interested it ('73 911RS, mmmm), but all things being equal, I'd have gone with the Silvia K. As it is, probably the Corrado.

EU:

'92 Golf GTI 16v MK2
'03 Mini Cooper S
'07 Pug 207 RC
'02 Saab 9-3 Aero
'95 VW Corrado VR6
'04 TT coupe 3.2
'06 VW Golf GTi

USA:

'05 Scion tC
'03 Ford Focus SVT
'06 Pontiac Solstice
'03 Lexus IS300
'02 Acura RSX Type-S
'98 Chrysler Eagle Talon TSi Turbo
'05 Chevrolet Cobalt SS

Asia:

'94 Honda Civic 1.5 VTi
'03 Hyundai Coupe
'91 Honda CR-X SiR
'94 Nissan Silvia K
'90 Mazda Savannah RX-7
'02 Toyota MR-2
'92 Toyota Supra 2.0 GT Twin Turbo

In #1 I started with the Audi TT - a pretty good choice as it seemed to have a good performance level compared with the competitors, along with being stable and quite neutral with the 4WD.

So, I imagine for the second I will repeat that, or perhaps the Golf GTi..

I go for Asia usually.
Quicker, better handling cars on the cheap

For Europe in Forza(1) I started off with the Audi TT, it monstered everything else in the lower classes for top speed, and once tweaked a little handled ok too. Pretty easy to drive with the 4wd too, got a bit boring after a while but was good for winning races early on.

The Silvia would be a good bet for Asia I agree.

PS, in Forza(1) the regions were set up in a similar way, but most if not all cars were available playing from all regions, it was just the prices which varied depending on region (ie Euro cars cheaper in Europe), and maybe availability of some of the more special cars, I think some of the old muscle cars were only available playing in North America region.

I always go with the US as I mainly like the muscle cars. If I can remember rightly though I think with Forza 1 I still ended up getting a Japanese car first as there wasnt much to offer from the US at the start.
I wonder if this game will have that money cheatpaperbag so you can go for a shopping spree with what seems like infinite cash.

yes Most of the 'American' cars you can get at the start are just rebadged Jap cars anyway.

eek how did I not know about this? Not that it was that hard making lots of money from the races once you got used to the game. I found a race (5 laps of the speedway iirc) in a certain class which I knew I could win easily every time with a certain car (GT40 perhaps), turned off all driver aids etc including ABS, difficulty right up and earnt 70k I think it was each time I did it.

Mk2 Gti for me I think.

I'll start in Europe as I want the Loti...

To add speed add lightness!
