Looks like my 360 is about to die ! It's a launchday console and I thought I had a good one. Just turned on and installed the dash update, started Forza 2 and 3 red lights.. How lucky is that... ?

Left for an hour and turned back on and it booted. I badly need to back up may saves especially Oblivion as I've 190 hours invested in it.....

Any advice on what happens next ?

If it dies do I have to send back my HD ?
What happens to my profile, gamer points, downloaded content etc ?

Glad I took out that extended warranty...

$hit .....

Dont worry - it can happen and be fine - only if it dies and wont restart is it a problem!

as for your HDD, i dont know, you shouldnt have to send it, and if you dont, tis all on there.

if you do, then you'll lose your save games and downloads - but your gamer profile and points will still be fine.

when mine failed I called MS who taged my serial number as "dead and replace", they asked me to ship it back, decided that I could not do without it for a few days and drove back to the reseller, who looked up the serial number found it was taged with "dead and replace" and they swapped it there and then. All the bits you want to keep (saves etc) are on the HDD and aslong as thats not the problem you can just swap them over. Someone somewhere listed what the lights mean - its possible its in a starting to fail state, this any help?

maybe just a dirty or bad disk?

I think saves are 'safe' but downloadable content is keyed to the 360? If so and the 360 dies bolting the drive on to a new console will get some but not all of your stuff back.

Odd...I got my console first week of January 2006 and it's been faultless. I installed the update yesterday and got three red segments a few times last night, as well as the console just freezing a few times in the menus. Touch wood, it's been fine tonight.

I put it down to coincidence (the early build ones are almost expected to fail at some point), but it's odd that you and I should both experience the same thing straight after the update. By this time tomorrow, this'll be a conspiracy theory.

You guys are worrying me, mines a Jan 06 console as well. Haven't installed the update yet and while it gets quite hot and makes a lot of noise, i've not had any problems (fingers crossed, touch wood, stand on one leg etc).

hi guys updated mine yesterday and today got the 3 red lights of doom , took out all the cables and left it for 5 Min's unplugged the power unit from the wall and it now is working again . I looked on youtube while i was waiting for the "towel trick" has anybody tried it yet? . I was going to do it if it never re-started as i figured if its shagged what harm could it do? and would just send it back anyway

Mine was fine this evening, so I'm less worried about it. I saw the towel trick, but mine isn't broken enough to risk that yet!

When my 360 died (well, the second one anyway!) I kept the HD.

I bought mine from Game though. So I could just walk in and do a swap, rather than having to send it back to Microsoft.

Well afer a rest it seems OK .... Very odd. Have to wait and see what happens. Seems very strange that others with early consoles are having the same problem juat after the update ...

Your downloaded live games only become available when your online. This has happened to mine and pissed me right off.

I emailed MS and they said there is no fix, the content you've paid for in the live arcade is keyed to your original Xbox, so offline they appear as demos but online its the complete game.

Mine struggled on for a few more days, and died on Sunday. frown Three red lights every time now.

Sent mine back last month for 3 red lights. Paid the service charge (launch day item, out of warranty). Got a new 360 back, much quieter and runs cooler

Bought a PS3 to tide me over. Really missed the 360's games, but the PS3 is a fabulous high-def media player, way better than the klutzy MS efforts

And the Wii is more outright fun than either (with the possible exception of Viva Piñata)

Still, paying the repair charge for a new 360 turned out to be the best value for money

How much was it, as a matter of interest?

dead here as well. I'm going to buy a core and take out the extended warranty when I get paid as I've heard far too many stories of the refurbs going wrong quicker than the new units

It was either £80 or £85 - if I remember, I'll update this when my card statement comes through.

well i feel fecked. not played my 360 much in the past few months. since I got the PS3 but tryed it Friday, after not being used for about 2 weeks. guess what. I got the 3 fecking red lights. already been backto MS once for this problem. now its out of warrenty and i seem to have lost hope in the 360 not falling to bits every 6 months so not sure what to do. I really am looking forward to some of the new games that will be out very soon but it looks like I have to pay more cash for my 360 to work.

Mine showed the dreaded 3 lights yesterday just when i had got some new games.

FOrtunatly unplugging from main ands plugging back in seemed to sort it.
