Right MOH is away today in Coventry.
He has been terribly supportive of me over the last 2 months and I want to buy him a new games console to replace his XBOX
So as I intend to go and pick it up this pm, what is the PH Collective view on the best machine?

360 without a doubt

Is there a huge improvement between the 360 and the original X box
Yup - get a decent full system. Xbox live makes the 360 an awesome experience on certain games and certainly adds depth.
If you were to ask the same question i about a years time I think the answer would be harder, but for me, for now the 360 is well ahaed of the PS3.

at the moment 360, next year ps3.
So surely if I am buying not just now but for the future, would a PS3 be the best bit.
as its such a close call graphics wise the 360 is about £200 and the ps3 about £400 with limited software at the moment, if not wait for the software, wait for the price to come down, if your going online the 360 interface is also supposed to be better.
If you want him to be able to play games on it (that are worth playing) straightaway, it has to be the 360.
The PS3 MAY (and that's be no means agreed by everyone) have the edge in technical ability but it has sod-all in the way of decent games at the moment, by all accounts. If the selling point of a Bluray DVD player built in isn't going to make a difference to your OH, the 360 is the sensible choice.

Bought a 360 and sold it 1 week later, not impressed by the graphics or by the fact that you have to buy an addition to the machine to play HD movies.
Bought a PS3 which has better graphics, has wireless conevtivity to router (not sure on 360), has blue ray player built in & you can rent blue ray discs at Blockbusters, Grand tourismo will be on this machine only (not for a while though), already some fantactic games with more to come, online game play is good and if your familiar with the PSP then navigation of the system is second nature.
PS3 definate.

Can you explain which games you tried and which look better on the PS3?
Only asking as so far, every side by side comparison i have seen online shows absolutely nothing between
them.In some respects the 360 does things a little better when under the microscope and vice versa.
That may change to a degree when programers get to grips with the PS3 hardware of course, but it will
never be to a level that would make me sell a 360 due to not being impressed.
It seems quite a few people who have both consoles suggest that currently there is little point getting a
ps3 if you have a 360 unless you want an all in one console and HD player. If you don't have either many again
suggest the 360 due to ease of use, addons you can buy as you go along and the fact the games catalog is superior
with many titles being no different at all to the PS3.
I am a huge console fan (and no ms fanboy btw) - probably owned nearly all of them and almost always imported them as i couldn't wait
and spent way over the top price wise to get them early.Currently though i have no interest in the PS3 at all.
That will change if it lands a few superb exclusives though, but as of now there are only really 2 games i would like to
try on it, maybe 3 at a push.
One of the guys i work with purchased a few PS3's to sell on and couldn't because they were int stock all over the place lol.
Maybe i'm not alone in thinking that what Sony brought to the table was a wee bit too little too late.
Than again, i have no doubt it is a superb console, both of them are, but selling a 360 after one week seems extreme to me,
especially for the reasons stated.
Ok well I bought a PS3 in the end.
On the basis of that if he doesn't want it when he gets back he can have a full refund.
Interestingly I went to Currys in Chippenham for it and they had one console and only 1 game for the machine. So I ended up going to PC World in Bath for a couple of extra games. I don't think I saw any X box's at all in these 2 stores, although there were plenty of games in stock.
So we will see what he says when he comes back. He isn't the sort of person that would buy a console this year and then another next, hence I purchased on the basis of what I thought would be the better machine in the medium to long term rather than this very minute.
He has got Call of Duty
A Snooker Game (It was the closest I could get to a pool game that he loves)
Blazing Angels
We shall have to see what he says.

forza 2 is out in about 2 weeks.
if he likes cars, I think he would have preferred the Xbox360 as Gran Turismo on PS3 wont be out for ages.
I would have a PS3 now, but for the fact that there are so few games out and so few decent ones on the horizon.
Might be worth getting one in a year or so.

8th June for Forza 2 (just reserved my copy... Blockbuster have it for £9.99 if you trade in one of the selected titles (inc Crackdown) when you buy it).
PS3 is tanking, so far all I hear is its future potential & sales dropping like a stone. Poor console sales does not make a rosy future.
IMO the PS3 is value if you want a BR movie player, for games its got a long way to catch up the 360 and its increasingly looking like it wont be given the chance.
