Can old X-box games be played on the X-Box 360?

...I'm quite keen to get hold of an Xbox 360 and a few choice games to play on my new 50" plasma, but I just wanted to check what the backwards-compatability of the 360 is?

Or should I be getting the PS3 instead?

I want to make the most of the big screen for driving/ flight sim games! I also love FPS's too.

Not all of them work though, there is a list on xbox.com of the compatible ones.

You wont regret it, wish Id bought mine ages ago.

I think some xbox 1 games need a patch off xbox live to work on the 360.
