Connecting to Xbox live

Grrr.. just had my BT broadband activated today so I thought I'd see what all the fuss was about Forza online - unfortunately, the Xbox 360 just refuses to connect to the 'net through a wired connection regardless of whether the network settings are automatic or manual. This homehub thingy is serving IP addresses to my other machines via wired and wireless connections so the DHCP stuff is definately working... just not to the Xbox 
Xbox support were about as much use as a chocolate teapot - no, I don't want to reboot the Xbox and my hub for the 20th time... it didn't work the first 19 times, so why would it work now??
Has anyone overcome these type of problems with a wired setup or do I have to fork out 60 quid for the wireless jobbie?

Xbox is connected directly to one of the ethernet ports on the 'home hub' (which incidentally works when my PC is connected to it with the same cable 
) - might possibly be able to borrow a wireless thingy for the Xbox tomorrow so fingers crossed that'll do the trick. I only have a one port modem that I use to plug my laptop and 360 into, alternating between cables for each one. Because I connect direct to the modem, everytime I use the 360 I have to reset the modem after if I want to use the laptop and vice versa, something to do with the IP addresses?
Anyway, my suggestion is, to unplug the PC's connection to the modem, reset it then plug the 360 in and hopefully it may connect?

You need to open up some of the ports on the firewall.

Also try putting the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway and DNS manually into the Xbox.
Just re-read your problem so you've tried manually assigning the IP already. If your computers are getting IP's from the DHCP there should be no real reason why the Xbox can't, have you try another cat 5 cable. I use a crossover form the Xbox to my wireless AP, but I'm shore I've read that the Xbox will work with both as the xbox LAN port can switch to use both leads.

Yup I have 5 or 6 Cat 5 cables I've tried (including x-overs), all of which work with the PCs but not the Xbox. Incidentally, you are correct, the Xbox supports DMIX and can use either cable type.Info here
