so whos on their original?
mine was only bought in November but i have never had it freeze or crash (touches wood
) and no marks on any of my discs....
mine stands vertical next to my Hifi with the power pack on a speaker next to an open window.
seems them breaking is a *very* common occurance....

Still on my original - bought the week GoW came out last year, been standing up since I got it - has done 4 trans-atlantic flights from UK to San Francisco in hold luggage and 2 european flights in hold luggage too - only ever had it come up with red lights once, I just powered off and on again and worked grand...

I'm typing this one-handed as I'm keeping a firm grasp on something wooden as I compose this post! 
16 months or so since purchase and I'm still on my first 360. It originally stood vertically but, after I managed to mangle my PGR3 disk when it got knocked after a couple of months, it has been lying horizontally since then.

Got mine in January. Never had any red lights or whatnot.
There's a piece in this months Edge. I've only read it quickly, but IIRC, it claims the problem is in soldering failures in the 400-odd connections betweem the GPU and the board. It recommends standing it vertically, as it claims the problem is due to the lack of space between the GPU and the DVDdrive is leading to heating of the solder. Stood on it end, hot air should more readily flow out the top. The other thing I picked up was from an Aussie article that claims that it's the lead-free solder used that is the issue, and that MS stopped speccing this on the GPU/board in October, so 360s build after then should not be afflicted.
FWIW, mine is in an enclosed cupboard, pushed right up against the back and side. Until recently it used to get sizzling hot, but I've had no probs. Since I read about the failures I've moved it slightly, set a fan against the side intake, and raised it off the floor by 3 inches. Now it stays cool.

Interesting stuff, I thought lead free solder was illegal now so not sure what they will use instead?
I got mine december 2005 and it's been fine. Until saturday when I started getting some very dodgy blue fringing on everything, turned it off and left it so hopefully it will be alright!

My original one was vertical for all of its life and it had extra fans and arctic silver, but sadly it still died. There's a piece in this months Edge. I am going to replace the heatsink clamps on mine soon and screw them on instead.Supposedly the clamps put too much
strain on the mobo and that helps the solder part company after a while (so i read anyway)
The addon thingy on the hard drive is called an Xsata mate.It allows you to plug the 360 HD into your PC via USB and backup/store
data.Appart from having a look at the HD's contents i have yet to back anything up yet though.I need to have a read up as
to what it can and can't do as all the files it sees are just odd named ones that mean nothing to me!

I'm on my original xbox. Also had a ps2 since its release and that's still going strong too.
I think people who break them dont treat them properly. My xbox gets used probably 5 nights a week, for several hours a time, but its on almost 24/7 as I have xbox arcade on auto download as well as use it to stream stuff off my PC.

Sounds like luck my friend as at 38 years old and the owner of virtually every console ever made i would challenge anyone to say i dont look after them,is that a 360 or an original xbox as my original old style still works fine as i had one of the decent dvd's drives which was good luck too.
