controler problem

I thought I might as well make another thread as I didn't know where to ask. When my premium xbox360 packed up I bought the budget one and swapped the HD across but my old wireless controller doesn't work with the new xbox the lights on the controller just flash but nothing getting through to the console so i'm having to use the wired one at the mo, is there anything I need for the console or is the pad just old fashioned buggered (the pad was coincidentally fine with the old xbox).
