Has anyone ever created a custom track for a driving/racing sim?. How easy/difficult would it be to create a virtual town made up of 'ordinary' roads and dynamics.

No fancy rendered scenery requirments, no fast vehicle dynamics; just a numpty driving experience, turn left, turn right, stop at junctions, etc... where would be a good place to start for this type of application?

I was asking him if what he had done with hitchin could be scaled up to a city-size track/route, with less emphasis on building detail, but more volume of roads, streets and junctions. I also wanted to know what software he used for the track/road stuff and hoe labour intensive that aspect of the project was. In short, can I build an accurate city road layout, say the size of Birmingham or even London, without the high detail of the buidlings, but with fairly accurate road dimensions, inclines, etc...

Well I guess it depends on the program you're using... guess it would need to be a high-end 3D rendering program...
But it's worth a look anyway smile

Depends entirely on the game you are looking to model a track for. If it's something like rFactor, GTR2 then it's relatively easy.

You can model the track in something like Zmodeller or 3d Studio Max as they both have the options via a plugin to export to GMT format.

Or you could buy Bobs Track Builder which is more WYSIWYG and can also do the same for rFactor.

There have been some big city tracks done, the problems you would encounter is the more you have on screen and drawn at long distance the slower the frame rate will be on normal PC's.

Here's an example, the Metro track for rFactor - http://www.rfactorcentral.com/detail.cfm?ID=Metro

For motorbikes? Absolutely none of them are waterproof, I've bought and used many and they all leak eventually. I'm starting to think that Marigolds inside bike gloves is the way forward!

Fairly easy with the data available these days.

Satellite map, landline data, spot height points, just make the buildings from big boxes to start with and concentrate on the road, kerbs and junctions specifically.

It's just the vast area of a city the size of Birmingham, and any specifics you might have issue with, ie, finer topolgy details like off-camber bends or mid-corner bumps etc which you'd have to spot out on a run and note down or film etc...

If you want to almost simulate the roads specifically it'll be alot of work, but a 'rough' copy would just be pretty easy to do just from commonly available imagery/vector data.
