Right, I've been of the belief that to make a car faster, first thing you need to do is make it stop and handle better.

Well, this works up to a point, but obviously on track like the Ring, where you've got some uber fast bits, you need some grunt too.

So, I'd be interested to hear what you guys prioritise in terms of upgrade parts?

I usually add them in this order:

Lightening (max. which immediately soaks up a lod of PI points)
Tyres - grippier, wider
Lighter wheels
Flywheel/clutch lighter versions
Brakes
Suspension
Gearbox

Then if I can, I add engine mods, but considering something like a class B, you're usually out of available PI points by then. I end up having to add the -ve PI mods (like the Forza bolt on spoilers) to squeeze it into a certain class.

What d'you reckon?

For the 'ring, you definately need power over grip biggrin Forget the lightening and making the tyres wider. From memory, my 8:04 setup uses the Pirelli Street tyres, standard width and with the largest rim size. All the other transmission/suspension/brakes etc. are set to the race versions.

Engine mods-wise I think the most important is the uprated cams and valves as it raises the red-line although I'm willing to be corrected on this. I'm running 412bhp at the moment. I think at least one of the Tommy Kairas right at the top of the leaderboard do use the forza spoilers, but I think you lose too much top end speed.

Having said that, the suspension and gearing setups are important too - not having to get too far out of the powerband (and minimising the number of gear changes!) knocks loads of time off.

Why the bigger rims? you only get a bit of credit for your loss of grip, I think Mekon,Foreright and me have similar parts on our cars now, no race tyres and no lightening, race suspension, gearbox and rollbars for maximum tunageabilitysmile

The bigger rims allowed lighter wheels if i remember correctly - the saving due to the lighter wheels being more than the weight added by the bigger rims if you see what I mean... not much, but every little bit helps biggrin

I have 400bhp and normal wheels, albeit big rims. I suspect out parts are quite different, but I am with you on no aero and just street tires. I might try going for an even looser setup in the hope for more grunt. That said, I've run a few 1:05.1s in that car I have now in multi, so there can't be a lot wrong with it. I just need to do a decent lap.

You two's times might finally persuade me to hotlap. Do you use the ghost?

No, it puts me off.

Puts me off too much too - I keep forgetting myself and trying to steer around it!

I found a good guide on a forum (can't remember where exactly, sorry!). Takes you through all the pro's and con's off all the mods and adjustments you can make. It recommended induction and exhaust mods as the best bang per buck in terms of points IRRC

One of the advantages of using bigger rims is that it decreases the points of your car (I know that sounds a bit silly!), therefore giving you more points available for other mods. Same applies for the spoilers and bodykit parts. Its obviously a balancing act though.

For the Scooby 'Ring you definately need power over handling. I went for handling first but I realised I lose too much time on the long straights. Although the car was fairly competitive over the first half of the lap.

The ring is completley different to most other circuits on the game.

Infact the only one that comes close is Road Atlanta - due to a long straight with several medium speed, and a couple of low speed corners.

The way I set my scooby (albeit a 8:12 one - after lots of tries) was to not reduce the weight, infact I increased it with the engine swap, bigger rims and diff.

I then sorted the drivetrain - you want 75% of these, especially for adjustability.

The rest of my PI was spent on engine mods, but concentrating on top end rather than acceleration.

I upgraded the tyres though, just a touch but I couldnt hold the high speed bends with the road tyres.

I prefer a much more neutral car to Mekon - so i actually avoided the snappy rear end, which makes it slower overall, but more stable and less prone to falling off (when i get the braking points right).

If I was going to try and improve (though i think my skill is the weakpoint tbh now - and ive posted my idea for the next Forza car challenge in a new thread) I'd probably ditch the race tyres in favor for wider tyres and a few extra HP.

I'd also sort the gearing - mine currently maxes at 180mph, but thats just before the right hander at the end, and if anything, means i have to slow and makes the car slower through that whole section - so i'd pull back to 175mph max, with a long 3rd and 4th for the mid-speed stuff, then a short 5th and 6th for the 3 long straights.

Blimey - well it sounds as if my setup for the Ring isn't exactly ideal! Then again, I've been in the top 3 last couple of races so can't be all bad wink

I'm giving away about 30mph on top speed :-o

Will have a play with my Kaira and set it up for power rather than lightweight (weight reduction uses LOADS of PI points as you know).

I'll be on tonight if we can get a session going?

Stig didn't know you played!

Not been on in the last couple of weeks but will be back on regularly now. My gamertag is Dr Gvil

Most important mods for me:

Bigger rubber
fully adjustable suspension
Fully adjustable ARBs
Race gearbox.

Lightening I leave until last, usually better gains to be had from more power.

Yup - as discussed the ring is not a normal track.

My usual tuning is as you suggest. Strip the mass, stick tyres and race suspension. Then turn the power up as far as you can.

For the ring, that doesn't work. Example, my class B scooby is probably 30-60 seconds slower than the fastest of the group, and I loose all of that on the straights.

My class B NSX was 90 seconds slower, but on a 'normal' track was 2-3 seconds faster than the same scoobies, because it was 300kgs lighter and had slicks.....

I need to build a ring specific weapon....

Wow iv got a completly different upgrade process. I go far all suspension/transmission and the 1st or 2nd weight reduction however i very rarely upgrade the tyres! Probably why im never super competitive at tsukaba and mugello. Most of my pi goes towards engine upgrades. I also prefer to keep the engine N/A and i avoid drivetrain swaps.

For the shorter, twistier tracks (i.e. Tsukaba!) you need downforce/slicks for grip and light weight - if you're always braking for corners, you never get to use the power biggrin My class-B scooby is quite quick around the 'ring but 5ish seconds a lap slower around Tsukaba than another class-B scooby which has more handling orientated upgrades.

I put a tuning calc together over a few days, using a knowledgable chap's maths from the official site. It's a little outdated now, and doesn't work with Porcsche's for some reason. It takes the car weight, how stiff you want teh suspension etc, drivetrain etc and spits out a load of numbers. It's a bit outdated now, but would only need a bit of tweaking to update it.

PM me if you're interested.
