Will foreign consoles play UK games...

Hi,

Currently in Hong Kong and looking to either pick up a nintendo Wii or a PS3 but slightly worried about if they'll play UK games.

Also, if I buy games over in Hong Kong will I still be able to play them in the UK if I buy a UK PS3 network subscription.

Lastly, which should I buy. I would love a PS3 to play bluRay discs and also for Gran turismo but the wii should be better for gaming.

ps3 games are region free so play on all systems, however I think blu ray films are region locked.
BTW, you dont need to buy a ps3 network subscription as its free.

Some Blu-Ray discs are regionalised, it depends on the distributor. It's a wierd situation, but there are lists on this here t'interweb that will tell you which are and which aren't.

The PS3 isn't region locked unlike most consoles however. However. You might find that the game is missing some of the localised content, which is fine, if you speak Japanese for example but if you don't could be an issue. But the on-line functions of the PS3 are, apparently, region locked. So a Asian console will only ever connect to the Asian servers, US for US and EU for EU; it's quite probable that any external IP to that area will either be banned or have reduced functionality. It's also conceivable that a UK copy of the game will refuse to work with the Asian servers.

BluRay disks are, as stated, hit n' miss. Some people have the region lock on... some don't.

So it's not region locked... but it can get a big enough hump to make it not worth it... so it is region locked

Wii, region locked.
360, region locked (as is the HD-DVD drive I believe).
PS2, region locked... and so on back down to the days of the NES

Dont think thats quite right as I have a Europe and American account on mine, IIRC one of the 1st options on network sign up is what region you would like to use. I made an american account so I could get the different demos they have
