Right, I'm after an Xbox game that has a few UK circuits on. I know they're nothing like doing it for real, but i think it'd be useful to at least learn the layout of tracks before I go on them. Any ideas?

Doesn't FOrza only have Silverstone, and the GP one at that, which isn't very often used to UK circuit racing? The tracks in the TOCA games aren't very realistic to be honest. I've used in car videos to learn UK tracks in the past - seems to be the only way forward. Failing that, there's always the Mark Hales DVD series.

biggrin Yes - thanks for that link D_Mike. It seems that most uk circuits are on there. I'll check them out when I'm next home (where my gaming PC lives!).

Yep, sorry, I was wrong about that. Still only has Silverstone though!

What on earth is all this about? I've just had a look at both websites but can really work out what it is. Is it a proper racing game, where you are racing, or one of those Champ Manager type ones where you set everything up, and watch the progress?

I'm downloading some trial version, although I couldn't work out what file was the right one to download so I have just downloaded some one with the US flag next to it, couldn't find one with a UK flag.

Racing game/sim. Not sure of the accuracy and whether it can be truly called a sim or not as I've only driven the F1 car very briefly at a friend's house, and I'm not sure I can comment on how F1 cars handle!!

the best mods are well up there as sims. The F1 car with the game was created with the help of BMW.

rFactor is a game in itself but its real strength is that is built to accomodate mods (modifications) made by third parties, with extra cars and tracks. obviusly some are better than others but the best are very good. search for rfactor on this forum - there is a lot written. The best mods are probably:

v8factor (current choice for PH rfactor league)
GP 1978 (1978 formula 1 cars! really good!)
Porsche Carrera Cup
few more... based on real and fictional cars and racing series.

many tracks are available (nordschleife included)

So if third parties [who presumably don't make much/any money out of these packs] are making the circuit add-ons how detailed are they? I mean do they go to the circuits and take thousands of measurements, levels, and photos so they are accurate copies such as Microsoft/Sony would? Because if they don't then surely there is no advantage to playing the game to learn a circuit over watching a video or just looking at a track map. confused

Most are very detailed and very accurate. Others are conversions from other games.
Here is the scratch built Le Man made by the Virtua-LM team - http://www.virtua-lm.com/lemans/ done professionally with thousands of hours work, photo's, GPS data etc...

As said above, some are very accurate, but do be warned - some are fairly innacurate. Graham Hill at Brands Hatch for instance is usually wrong, as most sims seem to have the older version that was much shallower. Also, at the Nurburgring some of the straights are different lengths to how they are in real life. All sims are definitely a help though yes
