My PS2 is getting on now, probabaly about 6 years old, and I may replace it after Xmas with a next gen console. Probably a 360, for Forza, for obvious reasons! When is the new 'reliable' chip going in them? Don't fancy the 30% fail rate!

The main reason for the thread. My mate has a 360 & a PS3, and a big flatscreen HD TV. I have non of those, and he reckons it isn't worth a new console without a HD TV. Thoughts? Is he talking guff? If not, how does a 360 connect to a normal TV? SCART? Or those yellow, white , red prong thingies (not a clue what they're called!)

Cheers

You can connect a 360 to a standard def TV using the component (RGB) cable, The cable has a switch on it for a standard/Hi Def TV (Think this comes standard with Premium console). You can also connect it using a standard AV lead (Yellow for video, White/Red audio).

Your mate is right though, you would be missing out a lot without the High def graphics, they are fantastic and a massive step up from the PS2/Xbox.

They even look quite good on old CRT pc screens too, that's how i started.
Then i also used it for a while on a Sammy 226BW and then grabbed a cheap
32" LCD tv.

I have a ps3 that i run through a 15" portable CRT and it looks great. You don't necessarily need HD tho some of the earlier x360 games had problems with text being so small as to be unreadable. don't know whether this issue has been resolved.

My 360 is running through a 28" standard TV, it looks better than my original xbox ever did but it's still not as good as it could be on a hd tv.

I held off buying the 360 because I hadn't got a HDTV, but I caved in and bought one for forza, i wish I had bought one before.

I found it depends on your screen size, The difference didn't really amount to much on my little panel in the kitchen, but when you try the two on a projector or a big screen then it really comes through.

Personally I'd get the 360 then use that as an excuse to start looking at new tvs too!
