Ive seen the full 15 minute gameplay video in HD and dont be fooled by the poor youtube quality, this looks amazing. Never been a huge MGS fan to be honest but if it turns out to be as good as its looking I may get it.
Have you seen Assassin's Creed in HD? Looks much the same sort of quality from where I'm sitting, when I compare what I see there that isn't that realistic (like how all shadows are hard edged and polygonal/angular) to AC, which are much the same.Basically, good, but not revolutionary. I think games like GOW and AC are approaching the upper limits of what the 360 will do graphically. Famous last words though!

Angular shadows are an artefact of shadow volumes, basically making extrusions of the object that is casting the shadow by constructing (sharp) polygons. Soft shadows are similiar but instead of polygons a texture is used so filtering/smoothing can be applied, there are pro's and con's to both though, soft shadows are limited by vram (because they are rendered into texture maps and filtered by the card) and "hard" shadows are limited by cpu (because its not easy to generate outlines/sillouettes quickly in realtime).
Another bottleneck which affects modern consoles is how data is streamed from the disc, consoles don't have the ram to load several gigs of textures at once so they have to be done piecemeal in a on-demand fashion, Mass-Effect sucks at this somewhat and GOW in some areas (this is known as "texture popup"
. Software techniques can solve these problems to a degree, anybody can "push" a machines hardware without effort, the trick is getting the most out of it. Games with limited freedom also help this problem, GOW is largely linear so anticipating what to load next isn't hard, games like GTA4 have higher degrees of freedom so anticipating what to read next is a problem (infact i know some of the techniques used specifically for that game, and it's not pretty)Sorry for the

Either way, IMO, the MGS series sucks, so I don't even know why I worry
