Call Of Duty 4 Xbox live and split screen

Just brought Call of Duty 4 and an Xbox 360. Got myself up and running on Xbox live.
One question. I remember playing on COD3 and you could have split screen and go on x box live. So your mate could be around and you could both play in a game on xbox live.
Can this be done on COD4, seem to be struggling getting that to work.
I can play split screen games against each other just on my machine, just not get us both onto Xbox live.

I'm pretty sure it can't be done which is a bummer. It would also have been nice to be able to do the campaign as co-op.

ON COD3 you could both go on and fight either together or against each offer.
Shame, it was a great feature

nope not on cod4

you can have 4 player split screen on halo3 and all be online at once (in the same lobby)
