nope hd-dvd is winning, and in a big way too.
apparantly across europe 7 out of 10 next gen dvd player's sold are hd-dvd. They also buy more films too on average 10 films per player has for blu-ray its only 3. (and yes ps3 is included in blu-ray player sales)
that offer has been on for a while it's on every hd-dvd player not just xbox
probably explains why the film per player ratio is high though.

would not surprise me in the least, it is the better format after all.
hd-dvd players are very cheep nowadays just looked on amazon toshiba £179 with 7 free dvd's . Which probably explains the number sold. I think the cheepest blu-ray player is still the ps3. which is £100 more and no free dvd's, given a choice if all you needed was a next gen dvd player people will buy the tosh
giving so many disc's away with a player reminds me of when the laserdisc market colasped i wonder if history is repeating itself

Paramount and rumoured to be making the switch from HD-DVD both formats
HBO have gone Bluray exclusive.
Warner Bros have gone Bluray exclusive
Digital Playground has gone Bluray (biggest porn seller)
New Line has gone Bluray exclusive
Samsung, Sharp and Marantz have all launched varying Bluray players
Its all pretty damning for the HD-DVD people. Basically it leaves Microsoft with the XBox360 and Toshiba left in the 'HD-DVD only' group. Even the rumours are surfacing that Microsoft have looked at using Bluray in the future. I am not suggesting that HD-DVD is dead, but it does seem to the casual outsider that the vultures are circling.
Microsoft will have a problem longer term with the X360 though. They need to find a way of providing mass media to the console. Playstation has the Bluray player so can really crank up the amount of data on the disk. As standard the X360 has only a DVD. It should be fine for the moment, but as the massive content games start coming out, its going to be harder and harder. So they need to get people to do something - either buy a player or something else.
Personally I think something else is probably going to win - download the content when you need it, but lets see. I would imagine that Microsoft are worrying that they might have backed the wrong technology.

Once it made it's announcement, all HD DVD promo work for the weekend was cancelled for the show !!
Irrespective of peoples opinions, if the people behind HD DVD themselves have given up, then that says it all really

The 5 free HD DVD thing has been around for weeks (maybe even reaching months), it's nothing new and has not come off the back of Warners announcement.It was there big 'let's try and win the battle' push, clearly didn't work though

Looks a lot different on there, but I think you get used to the improved quality pretty quickly.
Despite the above, and despite being resolutely "meh" about seeing Casino Royale in 1080p on a mate's 40+" Sony LCD off a PS3, i've got the HD/BD itch, and i've got it bad...

Are you looking for a slap?You'll get a BRD player soon enough for the right amount of money - so don't do something daft in the meantime.
I always did have a sneaky suspicion BR would eventually win - Sony wouldn't let this be the 3rd time they "lost" a formats war (Betamax/Attrac - VHS/AAC|MP3), plus the regional coding restrictions being absent on HD-DVD, and greater capacity (of only so much worth though).

I was going to go for the HD-DVD player for the 360, but two things put me off...
1: HD-DVD is pretty much dead now...
2: The 360 would only play 1080p via HDMI, so if you have an old 360 without the HDMI port (as I do), you'll either need to have a TV that is capable of running 720p/1080p through VGA, or buy a new 360. The xbox will output 1080p over component, but the HD-DVD specs prevent it being done for HD-DVD content.
Looks like I'll end up going to Blu Ray via the PS3, but only when GT5 comes out...
