Xbox Live WITHOUT official Wireless Adaptor?

Hey Guys,

Is it possible to use a normal PC wireless networking adaptor with the Xbox 360? There's no way i'm paying £60 for a wireless adaptor!

dunno mate ive got mine wired to my router as ive seen alot of lag issues from other gamers that use wireless.....esp if the router is in a differant room or even worse differant floor to the xbox360

Yes, it's possible, I have a Lynksys Wireless Gaming adaptor (only 11mbs - but you dont need much bandwidth to game really) which cost me about £20 back in the days of Xbox 1, and it works perfectly fine on the 360 too!

I've not had any problems with lag while using it, but I am considering going to a wired connection at some point, more so I can stream media from my PC to the 360 than any other reason.

You can pick up a wireless bridge for £20 or so off eBay.

Yeah it works fine, I use a USRobotics wireless bridge.

Disable WEP and use hidden SSID & MAC authentication. That gives you just enough bandwidth to stream a DVD over wifi.

Thanks chaps. My router is only about 5m away from my xbox, but it goes across a doorway so will get a wireless dongle to avoid running the lead across the door.

What do you mean by Dongle? If its USB then NO it won't work! It has to be connected via the 360's ethernet port at the back to a ethernet<->wifi device (a bridge or a wifi router with a bridge mode).

Sorry, I use the word dongle as a kind of generic term, e.g gadget/gizmo/widget etc. I know that dongle is a proper term, I was just being lazy I'll buy a proper wireless bridge from t'internet/PC World.

Just get a few meters of Cat5 and nail it around the doorway. It will be faster, use less electric, be easier to setup, more reliable and cheaper.

(I do find it hard to believe that you want a wireless bridge, with its own PSU, and a lead from it to xbox just for the sake of running a wire round the top of the door frame!)

Then you must have a understanding wife. According to my missus, I agreed to something about no visble wires on household gadgets as part of our vows.

I currently have my X360 connected to my wireless hub by an ethernet cable.
Would I get any benefit or defecit by connecting it via my pc?
I only have 1 ethernet port on my PC which is currently connected to the wireless hub.

There would be no benefit - you would lose internet access on both the PC and Xbox

If you do decide to go the offical wireless route, there is a good offer on at HMV at the moment, buy any game and get £10 of the wireless adaptor. But what makes it really good is that it can be combined with their buy one get one free offer on games.

I picked up Gears of War, PGR4 and an official wireless thingumy for £100, the same as the two games would have cost without the offer.

And i am very impressed with the wireless thing, clips neatly onto the back of the 360, no wires anywhere and connection has been faultless (easy to set up and plenty fast enough, despite a fair distance to the router)

I presume your wireless hub has only 1 ethernet input.. If so, Get a cheap switch or hub.
