Has Xbox360 damaged my game disc?

NOT happy at all tonight! Got in from work hoping for a few hours on the Xbox and my game will not load. Keep receiving repeated `unreadable disc' messages. The game in question was bought for me for Christmas and has not been out of the machine at all for the last ten days. I have taken it out to clean it, as the on screen message suggested. I have noticed several marks around the surface of the disc, which I am damned sure were not there when I put it in there 10 days ago! Over the last few days I have received several unreadable disc errors mid-game, but switching the console off and back on appeared to resolve the problem, but not any more. I have wiped it with a soft cloth but to no avail. I have a three week old game which refuses to load.
Has my machine scratched the disc? If so what the hell can I do about it? (It is not one of the chosen few games mentioned on the Xbox replacement list).

Update: After posting this, sent an email to Microsoft via their Xbox site. Have received a reply this morning asking me to call them as they require further information.
However, after sending the email last night, I have cleaned the disc with good old furniture polish and the marks appear to have gone (or at least been significantly improved). The game then played without a problem for an hour or so afterwards. Not even sure that the marks were scratches or not now, but they certainly looked like it. But I am sure that whatever they were, they were caused by the machine.

My machine still has a month of the one year warranty remaining. Should this be something I should be addressing with the retailer. Or is this type of behaviour normal?

Yup, mine did this. Then got rings of death a few days later.Once it does get the three red lights, my advice would be to take it into Game and tell them you bought it there but have no receipt. They'll switch it for a fresh one there and then. The guys in the shop are wise to the problems and its no skin of their nose as they get a rebate from MS for sending your broken one back. I found this much less hassle than calling MS and posting the thing away etc.

I always have my 360 on vertical. Took it around a few mates houses a while back, it started playing up so I tried changing it to a horizontal position. In my drunken stuper, I accidentally laid it horizontally UPSIDE DOWN. It worked for a few minutes, but then started crashing. Took the disc out, realised it was upside down, and my copy of Forza 2 now had multiple deep scratches in it and wont get past the opening credits.

This happened to me when I first got the machine. I assumed it should stand upright but as you all said the disc was scratched with 5 or so deep rings. anyway I took it back and told the shop and they replaced it, also said that the machine should be laying down. But there is no mention on the notes to do this.
The disc spinning in the drive acts like a gyroscope, and any movement of the box will cause the discs to get scratched. I lost my first Forza2 disc that way. Apparently it's a pretty widespread problem!
Got your receipt? Most places will replace a game that's been scratched, though not if you bring it back a second time, naturally...

I learned my lesson about having it stood up when I knocked it, it fell over about 30 degrees from vertical and was stopped by the wall. It still scratched my PGR3 disk to buggery.
Since then, it has always been laid flat. Even so, I still find that from time to time the underside of the disk picks up scuffs and marks, even though the console hasn't been moved. And they've not been caused by me taking it out of or putting it into the tray, I'm positive. Very odd.
On a similar note, always remove the disk before you move the console. I had a close call with Oblivion back when I first had a 360 while moving it from one room to another.....

Microsoft themselves say not to play the console in the verticle position because it causes problems and also blocks an air vent, only play it horizontal, that way It can't fall. They also strongly recommend that the console is never placed on a carpet as that causes cooling issues and never moved with a disc inside, regardless if the console is switched on or off.
