Its different for every map, every gun and every game type be it headquarters/hardcore team death match etc
My most commonly used set ups are.
G36C with red dot sight, claymores x 2, juggernaut, Last stand, any silenced pistol. I use this for any of the HARDCORE games which are 1 shot kill etc. I also tend to use the M4Carbine on this, i havnt decided which primary gun is better yet.
Then for everything else I use the G36C/M4 Carbine with grenade launcher attachment or 3x frags, stopping power, martyrdom, with any silenced piston. I have got 168 kills and 18 deaths on Shipment with this setup, as well as capturing 3 of the headquarters and destroying 2 so i wasnt just going for kills.
When i get further up prestige, I often swap my guns to my all time favourite.
Primary - Barratt 0.50
Secondary - Silenced P90
Perk 1 - 2 x Claymore
Perk 2 - Overkill
Perk 3 - Iron Lungs
That set up is amazing.
Ultimately it is different for every type of game, every type of map and everytpe of match and personal preference.

Well what do you prefer using? Someones favourite might not work for you and vise versa.
Personally for Hardcore rules I was using the M14 + Silencer as primary, P90 + Silenced secondary, Perks are Extra ammo, Overkill (allowing two primaries) & Extreme conditioning.
I switched that arrangement round yesterday to drop overkill and add UAV Jammer instead, seemed to work quite well in the few matches I played, in fact I got the "kill every member of the opposing team" Challenge in one map (And I got them all n about 10 seconds as they hadnt seen me sneak round behind their entrenched position, dropped them all with one shot each, very chuffed with myself for that one).
For me personally the M14 is the best gun in the game. It's a single shot weapon in Hardcore mode and 3 shots maximum in normal rules. With a silencer it's barrels of fun as whoever you shoot really has no fracking clue where you were and they are just dropped without warning
One thing to bear in mind is that if Gorvid is on the other team with a Barrett the trick is to stay the hell down... that man is positively dangerous.

you want to work your way through the gun achievements anyway - it helps you level up quicker..
I started on the heavy machine guns - they tend to be easier to rack up the kills with, and gets you the x-ray achievements.
OK - hadn't really paid any attention to that - is that the "challenges" stuff?I started on the heavy machine guns - they tend to be easier to rack up the kills with, and gets you the x-ray achievements.
The .50 is useful as it is pretty much the only sniper rifle that has any use at close range if you are discovered and the enemy is closing in.
I would say the best thing to do is to get the XP for each gun and try it out. None apart from perhaps the Scorpion are really that rubbish. The ones you start with such as the M16 is still probably the best overall Assault Rifle, and the first sniper rifle you get is the most accurate over long distances. The only exception to that rule is the P90 which has an advantage over the rest of the sub-machine guns due to the fire rate and time between reloads.
I have been through the game twice and like different things about each one. Each map has its own best guns, and depending on your style and role you want to play, each gun has its merits on any map.

some weapon based (get so many kills you unlock the red dot, silencer.. scope etc..) which give you 1000 points for the highest.
others just random - like shooting people through walls, martydom, cooked grenades etc..
The barratt 0.50 is by far the most pleasing weapon in the whole game once you master it.
The joy from the sound of it and the poping of someones head in your sites is awsome.
When I'm in a game and hear one blasting in the distance I sit and hope that the person with it is either on my team on not very good with it.
In my last prestige level I achieved my level 3 0.50 all with headshots I love the gun....The ACOP scope on it is however completely crap and the gun looses all acuracy.

Iron Lungs and a very steady hand is the trick.
Following someone along for ages and popping them in the head is so satisfying.
If your playing Search & Destroy or sabotage then having on sniper camping out is great fun. allow hem to start planting the bomb and kapow of the 0.50 and its all over. Brilliant.

My 5 kits are:
M14 / M249 SAW with red dot sight
3x Frag grenades
Stopping power
Matrydom
(For mass carnage maps)
M16 with silencer
MP5 with silencer
Bandolier
Overkill
Dead silence
(for pretty much any map / mode)
M4 Carbine with silencer
Desert Eagle
Bandolier
UAV Jammer
Dead silence
(For sneaky sneaky maps)
Barret .50 cal
Desert Eagle
Claymore x2
Stopping power
Iron lungs
(For sniping, mainly only on overgrown)
P90 with red dot
Desert Eagle
Bandolier
Double tap
Last stand
(For vacant - P90 with double tap is insane!)
Definitely recommend silencers as much as possible. Without one, as soon as you fire, even if you miss, everyone on the map knows where you are, so you gotta keep moving. At least with silencers you can pick people off, then as long as you aren't in the exact same place (Kill cam they will see where you were) then you wont be found

For most team games:
M16 with red dot
Claymores
Stopping Power
Deep Impact
For free-for-all games
M16 with silencer
Claymores
UAV Jammer
In harcore games I might dispense with stoppin power, as it's pretty much one shot kill anyway.
I can't shoot with the M4, G3 single round makes things hard for me, and now I've got red dot on M16 I justl like it.
ACOG scope seemed great at first, being able to see further, but it's slow for closer quarters stuff and when you get your eye in you don't need it so much.

Your shouldn't be using aiming-down-the-barrel at close quarters
As soon as one bullet hits the other person the centre of the screen will show a small X shape which you can use to line up yours shots.
