New PC, Gaming spec?

I am about to confirm my order for a new machine with the following spec. I want it mainly for editing HD Video and photoshop but wondered what the consensus would be concerning its gaming ability. Any glaring omissions?

8GB OCZ PC-6400 800MHz SLI RAM
2 x 500GB (1TB) SATA 16MB Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive

That looks pretty damn beefy to me. The Q6600 is better value though and can be overclocked a LOT.

What motherboard are you getting?

Yeah I run a q6600 at 3.2ghz on air so it flies along.

The GTX is the real weak link there go for at least a 768 GTX or Ultra for a high spec gaming machine.

Is that a 512mb GTS, if so, performance up to about 1900x1200 is comparable to the more expensive, hotter, older, GTX, but above that the GTX still reigns
The GTX is 768mb RAM though, so just have a double check there.
If you're comfortable with OCing, the Q6600 is a good way to go, although even if you're not (generally) teh 6600 is better value than the 6700.

in any case will the spec run car racing games at an acceptable speed, how would they compare to similar games on a console?

In answer to your question, yes of course it's gaming spec, you have 8gb of ram and a graphics cards that cost nearly as much as my plasma telly.

It would murder consoles quite easily (for comparison i play my 360 and pc on the same LCD monitor, and the difference is stark, the 360 has big blocky pixels whereas the pc has much higher resolution for the same visual quality).

4 cores are 4 cpus no?

Not technically 2.66ghz x 4 because the cores have to share 1 connection to RAM which is the bottleneck.

Technically the Core2Quads are 2 Core2Duo cores, with each pair sharing cache.

True, still 4 cpus with bottlenecked ram (which makes them a bit slower than 4 seperate cpus but still 4 cpus nonetheless)

..And ditch the 64 Bit OS and at least 5GB of RAM if you intend the PC to play games as well as PS - the 64 Bit OS requires signed drivers for everything, no ifs or buts, and a lot of games will not work. (I know because I too looked into the 'ultimate' all round system a while back)

think that has changed now. There is a good article in PC Format March 2008 page 138

Buying from my local computer shop, just opened by a client of mine. I usually I build but decided to let him supply and build it. Very very reasonable price I think. I probably couldnt have got it much cheaper if I'd sourced all the bits myself. It will be ready next week. i'll let you know how it performs!
