How long should a PS2 to kept running ?- should it be switched off after some time to ensure reliablity -will overuseage cause overheating and damage it?

When I had Gran Turismo 4 on the PS2 there were some 24Hour races. I didn't have the stamina to do it one go, so during the holidays I played for 8 hours a day, leaving the game on "pause" for the other 16 hours per day and got the races done over about 3 days. In total the machine was running solidly for 3 days, or 72 hours. Had no ill effects.

Mine was one of the original launch units in the UK. HTH.

Agreed. The main thing is that there's decent ventilation around it and there's nothing on top of it or blocking the vents which would cause heat to build up.

Under "normal" circumstances (i.e. in a room of average habitable temperature and humidity with adequate space around the unit) they will run and run.

my ps2 was switched on for about 2.5 weeks solid. didnt have much chance to sit through many continuous hours doing the 24hour races.

its still fine.
