As for games it really depends on what you like playing. The Wii is definitely a console to have some excellent games which are played between friends, "party games" but they are usually terrible if played on your own.. i.e. Wario Ware and the Sports title (after the initial interest has gone).. Geometry Wars : Galaxies is excellent and there are some superb titles coming out... Mario Kart and also the Virtual Console games (you might need the Classic Controller for some of these). Wii Play is slightly weak, but a good head to head game, and you get a Wiimote "with it" - you'll want one of those! I've only got two Wiimotes but only one Nunchuck..
If I were you I'd take a look at www.avforums.com and also www.pimpmywii.co.uk (good competitions on here, with Wii Points prizes and games up for grabs!) for more info. and pointers to good value deals on games and peripherals.
Some of the older games are good value now as they don't have much online connectivity - recent games are addressing this!
Big Brain Academy is also good if you like that sort of thing!
