What to get - PS3 v Wii v XBox360
Discussion
I'm rewarding myself with one of these three consoles in the coming weeks. Not sure which one to get. Just looking for some input, guys. A few notes below to perhaps help you.
1) I am not a serious gamer and know that I would not consider network play with others gamers.
2) I love the Grand Theft Auto series, with number IV soon to be on PS3 and XBox
3) I love Mario Kart, soon to be on Wii
4) I would not mind a console that allows me to watch DVDs/Blue Ray
Any thoughts?

I have a Wii and really enjoy it - it seems to be more simple than the PS3 or X Box and therefore I think has more appeal, esp to those who didn't grow up with consoles.
That said, my mate has a Xbox and went on Live the other day - I was in tears of laughter playing Forza and PGR4 on line - some people take it very seriously - we didn't

I would say buy a PS3 for your requirements.
For something fun based buy a Wii, not only will it give you exercise but it will be sure to put a smile on your face.
If you aren't that bothered about the DVD capabilities and don't wish to play Gran Turismo then buy an X box 360. I bought one when they just came out and sold it due to the lack of available games. I now wish that I had kept it as it was an awesome piece of kit.
The graphics were sublime and in a game such as Tom Clancys war series you actually felt in the game.
So then, if you have a few hundred spare and can't make your mind up, you could always buy me the following:
X Box 360 Premium
Fifa 2008
Forza Motorsport
PGR 4
Tom Clancys war games
GTA4
I would be forever grateful.

I'm ashamed to admit we have all three (sign of indecision, not games addiction). All have different strengths, so there's no single right answer. If these really are your main criteria:
1) You may be surprised how compelling and and how much fun games like Call of Duty 4 can be online. PS3 lets you play online without a paid subscription unlike XBox live, so on that front I'd say PS3
2) XBox 360 has a wider choice of games of all types, so more likely to find something that really suits you
3) Wii is really good for playing with mates or with family; it's not as powerful and the graphics are much weaker than PS3 or XBox, so solo games can lose novelty more quickly
4) PS3 is a stupendous DVD and HD video playback machine. Unlike the XBox it is near silent and, at least in my experience, much more reliable
If I had to get rid of two, I'd keep the PS3 on balance. The family would keep the Wii...
quite frankly....
The prices have dropped so buy a wii (180) for parties - and an xbox360 (199 FOR PREMIUM)for games.
You could do this for a little more than the cost of the PS3 (300) ;-)
As for a PS3 and blu-ray let the hype settle now the format wars are over and the chinese
start to import players for 30quid.
Rent games for 360 and wii rather than buying them - although buget games are available for both now.. so save compared to the PS3...
quite frankly though the core of the 360 experience is live....
and it will depend on what your friends have...
Simes.

I have all 3 consoles. I use the PS3 the most because it doubles as a blu-ray player and media server. For the serious gamer, there is little to choose between the xbox and PS3, it really comes down to personal preference and available titles. The PS3 online gaming is a lot more slick (and also free).
Neither can compete with the wii for post pub entertainment though

Appreciate the thoughts on online gaming. I know it is something that I would love but I just do not have the time.
I dont imagine going for the Wii on the evidence of the posts I have just read. The whole point of going for a console is to allow me to shut myself off for a few hours.
It comes down to the PS3 and Xbox. If I discount the DVD capability (not really a factor for me to be honest) and do the same for online play, it comes down to the quality of the games.
As mentioned, GTA 4 is a must. A good racing game with a steering wheel (always fancied one since my MEgadrive days) is a consideration.
Tizer
For pure racing, there is a better choice of peripherals like steering wheels for the XBox 360. And right now I'd rate Forza as the best racing game (that's just a personal opinion, others will have different preferences).
So it' looks to be down to that that vs the quality of DVD / Blu-ray playback
Choices, choices...

I also have all three. The Wii got used for about a week and then I got bored of it and probably haven't used it in the last year. Xbox 360 has a much wider range of games, obviously as it has been out longer. Also as you have mentioned Grand Theft Auto, microsoft have paid a rather large amount of money to get additional content for the 360 if that makes a difference to you. In the short term you can get a hd dvd drive for the xbox, and as they have seeming lost the format war, you can get loads of hd dvd's at rediculously cheap prices at the moment, but then it won't last. The Ps3 gives you free on line gaming and blu ray capabilities, which really is the future. If I were to have just one, it would probably be the PS3.
I've owned all three, mind you i have sold the wii. The xbox at the moment is better, mainly because of the games that are out. The ps3 is good but does lack the titles. Basically i reckon your best buy at the moment would be the ps3 for the blue ray player. Microsoft have been suggesting that they might release a blue ray player.

Yes it's free, but a lot more slick?Right now, an Xbox 360.6 months to a year down the line, probably a PS3.Until Sony update their online messaging system btw, the 360 offers up a much, much nicer online experience.Currently you have to quit whatever game you are playing to read or send a message on the PS3 and also to see who is online and it starts to feel like having teeth pulled after a while. On the 360 it is a doddle. The more friends you gain online with the PS3, the more it starts to annoy the crap out of you.
I have had GT5 Prologue for a while now too, is not bad at all but the skid noises are rubbish, i still play with forza more currently.
Never had a wii, i know 2 people with them and they dig them out on special occasions which is all i would ever do too, so no real point me owning one.

Don't know about slick, but it seems relatively free of muppets. I have a paid xbox live subscription but prefer the online experience on PS3 where a game like COD4 is available on either platform
I would assume that is because there are far less people online with the PS3 currently.Edited by Digby on Monday 24th March 19:14
