PS3 max friend limit?!?

Seems there is a max number of friends you can have. Not that I have many (or any) real friends 
but after adding all the PHers with the hopes of getting more COD chums online to go to war with, I got an error message saying I couldnt add any more chums 
A quick google and this does seem to be the case. But why?
To prevent servers from overloading perhaps?
And do we have any reason to believe this may be rectified?

50 I suppose. I googled before submitting my post and gather this is the limit.If adding them wasnt a bit of a bugger, figuring out which ones arent COD4 players before deleting them is going to be an even bigger pain in the arse.

I spent ages roaming the vast wastelands of Oblivion (reads: mainly running away from monsters) but in the last year I only really fired up the 360 to watch 2008 will be a good year for gaming, having just discovered COD
AND with GTA 4 just around the corner!! Spoilt for choice! 
Its just as well Im not a 360 owner anymore, otherwise you'd have yet another PHer on your 6 taking pot shots at the Grand COD4 Pubar
(Although the worst damage Id likely inflict, would be to mash my stab button at you from the far side of the room)
