Intermittent problem with xbox headset

Headset stopped working a few weeks ago - no sound in the earpiece and nothing was being picked up on the microphone. Just about to buy another one and tried it one last time and it worked.

Then I try to join a few COD4 and GTA games last night and it stops working, but my gamertag shows that I have a headset connected when in the lobbies of both games.

Also when I boot the Xbox it normally just turns on but does not do anything, no picture or sound or disk loading. Occasionally I get one red light (lower left if the box is stood up). On the second attempt it always works fine. Strange. This has been the case for over 6 months.

Anyone heard of the console causing the problems with the microphone? Seems odd that it displays a connected headset when it is not plugged into the controller.

Tried both controllers and it doesn't work.

Any ideas?

When I had a 360, I remember the headset was rubbish, exactly the same as yours. Sometimes it worked, but most of the time it didn't. It's almost like there is a loose connection somewhere.


If you use Live a lot then the wireless one might be a worthwhile investment.

But why do I have the feeling I'm be wasting more money when that breaks!

In regards to the one red light issue you might want to try turning the 360 off, then disconnecting and reconnecting the Hard Drive. Sometimes that solves it. As for the headset issue, are you using the first gen xbox360 headsets with the large block at the end or the headsets with the inline remote? Ive found the newer ones with the inline remote less prone to faults. You might want to check the obvious such as make sure the mute switch on the headset isnt flicked on and try turning the headset volume all the way up. Another thing to test might be recording a voice message and that it plays back ok, incase it might be an audio issue due to multiplayer NATing issues... Im clutching at straws.

I have had sporadic headset issues like this since I went online in December last year.

Usually only occurs for the one night, then retifies itself - it's as iff you are only connected to live for gaming/controls but the headset stuff has been dropped.

You could try it in another controller, if it still fails then at least you know it's just the headset.

Regarding the wireless headset I've heard a lot of reports about them just refusing to charge after a while which is a bit rubbish.

Some of the popular routers (e.g. BT Gnomehub) can randomly change their NAT settings - worth switching off the router for a couple of minutes then turning back on - should reset the NAT status. I've had trouble getting into multiplayer Forza 2 matches when it happens, and some Halo too, this seemed to rectify it.
