Yep, once again my pile of st (also known as a 360) has decided to give up the ghost.

This time however it has decided to stop working by refusing to read any disc that I pop in the stbox so it doesn't take a genius to work out that the drive has clearly died.

The annoying thing is that although I am still within the 3 year warranty, that only covers the RROD as far as I am aware so technically this will have to come out of my pocket.

I am going to contact Xbox and tell them that I won't be covering the cost of repair as far too many consoles have died in this manner, but the only trouble is that last time I had a problem I only managed to speak to a woman called 'Sheila' in India and as you have probably already guessed, she didn't know her arse from her elbow.

Does anybody have any suggestions for me to contact someone of importance about this?

Try these people:

http://www.unbrick360.co.uk

Looks like you can buy new drives off ebay for £30 and the folks above can sort out the drive firmware for you.

I agree. Wrap a towel around it and leave it on for 24hrs (preferably while it's working at full chat). That should cook it quite nicely.

Bugger, your one of the few people of the 30+ playing GTA every night that actually bother to go on-line with it.

We should have another GTA thread for those who are actually willing play on-line.

Seeing as it's only 2.5 years since the 360 was released I think you're safely within the 3 year period wink

Mines done the same too.. Second one that has packed in!

This time it is refusing to play a game, throws a tantrum then freezes up on me!

The peculiar thing is that if I am in a private chat with someone we can still communicate? confused

Could it be that all I need is a new HD AV Cable thingy?

Sorry for the rather blatent thread hijack! biggrin

That sounds like a possible drive failure to be honest.

I just get the message 'Unplayable Disc' where it normally reads 'Open Tray' if you have yet to insert or game or displays the games name if it is already inserted.

I think the only way to get this sorted by warranty is to cook the xbox! I have sent e-mails to the addresses Mekon kindly offered and although I have yet to receive a reply I do know that my e-mails have been both received and read. I don't really want to phone a call centre in Delhi just, well not until I receive some replies from my e-mails anyhow!

Well if it's RROD, you are fine. Be sure it is:

As long as it looks like that, you'll get a free repair. Like I said, moan enough and they'll compensate you with a bunch of peripherals.
My XBox 360 is showing this pattern...

Which doesn't look like the 'normal' ring of death pattern (note the console is upright). Any ideas what this means? Will Microsoft still repair it?? (its less than 3 years old)

The reason it looks different is because you have your xbox upright so in answer to your question it's still the Red Ring of Death and yes they will cover it under warranty.

If, with a healthy console, you start the 360 up and link it to a wireless controller the top left green ring will light up regardless of whether or not it is turned sideways or upright and obviously depending on the rotation it is a different L.E.D that is lighting up depending on the orientation of the console.

So nothing to worry about...well unless you take into account the fact that it's broke! frown

I think it is because the in the first picture the console is laying on its side (note the power sign) and I have noticed before that there is some sort of magic gizmo that tells the xbox where it is lying down or not, hence the first controller light always being in the upper left quadrant.

They should have no problem repairing it either as the "RROD" is covered for 3 years as you say.
