I keep hearing rumours that Goldeneye might be ported from the N64 to the Wii. What are the chances?
I loved it on the n64 and it's the main reason I got a crap degree - too many classes skipped to play 4-player multiplayer in our old student flat.
I seem to recall there are licencing issues that make it unlikely? Rare are owned by Microsoft now perhaps?
Or is it about time that some IT-geek ported it to the pc so we can all play online multiplayer?!

I was watching a bit of Pulse last night on Sky and they had a Goldeneye Challenge on and they were running it on the 360......at least that's what the blurb said when I pressed the 'i' button ??
Didn't see the console, nor the controllers they were holding, but it looked as jerky as anything......horrible

Interesting. I still play it occasionally on the n64 but long for online multiplayer... must just invite mates round to the house more often i guess...
The Goldeneye faithful with their blinkers on will curse me to hell for this, but there are much better multiplayer games out there now, Halo 3, COD4, Team Fortress 2, Unreal Tournament, all of which will provide as much balance and better map layouts. I used to love huddling round a TV and playing Goldeneye and Perfect Dark with mates, but times have moved on and it looks positively agricultural when viewed now.Steve Evil said:

I don't go in for the whole nostalgia thing myself, it just ruins those happy memories of those games for me, instead of remembering the game as a great experience from it's own era, I compare it to the current generation of games and end up tarnishing those good memories.
I don't find that at all, i can accept the failings ciompared with modern games but i still appreciate what i loved about the games first time round. Hell, i still occasionally crank up rugby world cup on my cpc6128+ !!!!I remember reading an article in a magazine recently about a 360 version of Goldeneye due for xbox live arcade.
Sadly it stated that, although Rare had finished it and it was all ready to go (with an optional HD graphics updated version, new online modes etc), Nintendo kicked up a fuss and threw their weight around a bit so it looked very unlikely to be released.
The stupid thing is it was also being ported to the Wii Virtual Console, but now this won't be done either according to the article.
It wasn't that Nintendo hold any rights to the licence, was more political, something to do with the publishing house that own/are heavily involved with Rare not wanting to upset Nintendo in case it made things sour in the future.
Load of old balls, I for one would download Goleneye from XBLA and I hardly download any full XBLA titles. I'm sure many others would want it too.

Having replayed it after rebuying an N64 recently, firmly left in the past with rose-tinted spectacles is best. It isn't really a patch on any modern FPS as that model has been tweaked over the years! It was good fun, but nothing like as much fun as I remembered! Hard though!
Perfect Dark on the other hand was still fantastic!
All those MP modes, the difficulty, the graphics... everything.
Still the definitive shooter (for me!) in that it took all the best from Goldeneye and improved it!

You can play it on the PC on-line already.
Where, and how??

I have a massive disc of ROMs (all legal ones, of non-mass market games!
) with emulators for N64, SNES, Mega Drive etc. Was £10 on eBay! Gassing Station | Video Games | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
