It's not THAT expensive, it's 13 AUD/USD per month (which is 6 quid or something). Most people could grow that much money in their couch! 
When compared to *cough* "other" online games, it's more than reasonable.
And you're not paying that fee for just having the game, all of the servers are run by iRacing (and there is a lot happening at any one time!), and the stat tracking etc is all handled centrally.
Wreckers get excluded by the money, but they're also dropped by their safety rating and iRating, which is a measure of ability. People of similar ability will be matched up when racing, so you won't get blown away (keeps the aliens with the aliens). The better you do, the harder the competition gets.
The main expense in iRacing is the additional tracks/cars, but this is offset by bonus credits you get from subscribing. I managed to swing the skip barber car and all of the tracks for that series with just bonus credit (60USD all up). There's also a bonus this year where you get an extra 15... I just need to choose which track i want the most, silverstone or road america...

I didnt realise you had to buy the additional tracks and cars as well 
I might try iracing for a month and see if I like it, but im deeply suspicious of these types of subscription games. I dont like the way that most of the content isnt included, and as more cars/tracks become avalable you will have to pay out over and over again.
