They took it out after the 60gb model, which will only do it via software emulation anyway and it isn't brilliant. So if you've got a 40gb model then you won't be able to do it and Sony have no plans to re-introduce it.

Crap isn't it? You can however play PS1 games on it fine, had a night of Gran Turismo 2 because of it, good times!!

In my experience it isn't too bad. I noticed Gran Turismo 4 has some slightly odd graphical corruption in the very top left corner of the screen during races, but it isn't really a problem. Everything else I've played on mine runs quite well.

I can't help but think dropping the backwards compatibilty was a really stupid idea by Sony. But hey, having stupid ideas seems to be what they're good at.

I've only tried a few games on it, most have been ok, but some have had some pretty serious bugs, like Kingdom Hearts 2 which I had to stop playing as I encountered a game ending bug where a boss became invincible, making further progress impossible.

How did I know that was coming?

I've just done a google search for it and apparently it's been fixed by a later firmware update, so I'll have another go tonight.
