Hi gamers biggrin

I have a dual core 1.8GHz pc with about 1GB of RAM, so I can't play the most up to date games available, and have a strange urge to start on some sort of WWII campaign game.

I want something with a bit of strategy (I don't really like "shoot, run, shoot, run, shoot" type games that much tbh)

Any ideas people?

Thanks in advance

Company of Heroes might just run ok on your machine, or look into the brothers in arms games which are very tactical first person shooters involving lots of flanking and cover.

Call of Duty 2 should work OK. I've played it on worse.

As said try company of heroes. Runs on mine but haven't really bothered playing it yet for some reason.
I thought Brothers in Arms was quite good too and is a bit more tactical than others.

For old school top-down strategy WW2 then get Close Combat V - Normandy.

Early Battlefield series will work and look ok at 1024 x 768 (bearing in mind they were pre-widescreen), there are some others listed too smile

Recommend from experience:

  • Battlefield 1942
  • Battlefield 1942 Road to Rome (add on)
  • Battlefield 1942 Secret Weapons of WW2 (add on)
  • Battlefield Vietnam (good sniper action in the undergrowth hehe
  • Battlefield 2 (excellent game but may be too much for your graphics)
  • Battlefield 2 Special Forces (add on)
Other good 1st person games with lesser graphics requirements:

  • Return to Castle Wolfenstein... simply excellent multiplayer... "We need an engineer!" hehe
  • Red Faction
  • Unreal Tornamnet 2004
  • Project IGI
  • Max Payne

Dont forget Operation Flashpoint, very big amongst the internet fraternity and quite a few mods too.

To be honest though Call of Duty and others like that kind of fit into his Shoot, Run, Shoot, Run category. As much as I love them they're not the most intellectual games.

if CoH doesn't work, try 'blitzkrieg' for a simpler version

I have a similar machine at home and can second that CoH does not work. Shame as its a really good game. Have to use my work laptop to play it.

Ground Control was a good game but over a little quick

CoH is great but you'll need to turn the graphics down to play smoothly. I've got quite a nice specced machine and I can play most things on "11" but CoH can cause it problems when you have a lot of action, exlposions, airstrikes etc all happening at the same time.

As an aside, I was thinking similar to the OP the other day. Anyone suggest a really good WW2 strategy game - on a national level, rather than squad level like CoF or BiA? I remember one some years ago called "John MckAy's WW2....." or soemthing like that. Looking for a game where you control the build up of resources, military production, strategy on a global scale, that kind of thing.

Cheers
