I see there is an 80gb PS3 being released next week for circa £299.
Why is the 40gb PS3 still about this price? Does it do something else?!
Do they make the 60gb version anymore? Is this any better?
Can you play PS2 games on any or all of the versions?
I'm so confused!

You cant play PS2 games on the 40GB PS3 but you can play "some" on the 60GB and 80GB

Other than that the bigger HD versions have card readers and the 40GB doesnt.

There will still be stock of the 60GB around for a little while.

Google and in this case, Wiki, are your friends:

Bigger doesn't always mean better but it depends what you want.

I think you'll find that in the UK the 60gb is the only one that will play PS2 games, the 80gb is effectively the newer model 40gb version just with a bigger HDD.

The 80Gb is the same as the 40Gb just with a larger HDD. As such, it is not PS2 back-compatible, does not have a built-in card reader, only has 2 rather than 4 USB sockets and does not support SACD playback.

You can still get 60Gb units from places like Gamestation or on ebay, but for my money they're not worth the premium. I personally wouldn't be playing PS2 games, and I can add more USB sockets and a card reader at little cost by plugging in peripherals.

The 80Gb version is released on 27 August. The 40 Gb version will remain on sale until then, or until stock runs out. There will not be any (official) price cut on the 40Gb version, but you may see retailers discounting it when the new one is available.

The 80Gb version has the newer DualShock 3 controller too, which seems to be preferred by most people to the older SixAxis controller. Buying it on it's own will cost you another £35 or so.

So they have you think

I have the 40gb console and came home last week to find my flatmate playing one of his PS2 games on my console.

I was told by my local Game store that the 80gb version will be listed at £399 and that they will halt production of the 40gb for a period.

No Way! Impossible! 40Gb PS3's can NOT play ANY PS2 games, so unless you have a PS3 from outer space or a 60GB PS3 that someone has 'upgraded' with a 40GB hard disk hehe I bet he was playing a PS1 game, which should work in all PS3's.

Maybe he was being cheeky and downloading ps1 games from the playstation network? (I don't actually know much about the PS3 so I'll shut up now)

Worth pointing out that you can upgrade the HD yourself, and it actually tells you how to in one of the guides which came with my 40gig
