PS3 - HDTV

Hi guys,

I'm looking at buying a PS3 My 50'' Samsung plasma is a HD-TV, however it's not 1080P. I'm sure this will effect the benefits of watching Blue-Ray movies, however just how much will it effect the games?

Not much really as there are not many games that are 1080p at the moment. The likes of Grand Theft Auto is 720. Gran Turismo IS 1080p and looks amazing, but from what I have read unless you are doing back to back testing you are unlikely to be disappointed with a 1080i image.

Used my PS3 on both the 1080i and p in our house, and saw no difference at all, at least not to my eyes anyway

I can't really tell the difference between COD4 (720p) and GT5:P (1080p), mind you this is on a smaller screen.

Get a LCD instead of plasma, plasma tv's can't handle video games compared with LCD in terms of icture quailty and appreantly video games bugger up the tube inside according to my neighbour.

He already has the plasma. And your neighbour doesn't know what he's talking about, there is no tube inside a plasma, the concern with early plasmas was down to screen burn where a static image will eventually be burnt into the cells and you end up seeing it constantly, but the modern plasmas are much better. Plasmas are actually better than LCDs for gaming if you don't take the screen-burn issue into account, they are much better for blacks and react faster than LCDs so you don't end up with ghosting on fast moving images.

hmm, interesting, where did you find plasmas being faster than LCD's ?

also, have you checked out regassing of plasmas of late?

granted, they are worlds better than 3 years ago (when we binned a 9 month old daily use plasma that cost more to re gas than it cost to replace) but i'm curious to your source on info.

The pixel response time is still faster on a plasma, LCD is catching up but isn't there yet, so moving from black through the spectrum of colours to white, a plasma is faster, and this is where LCD will suffer with fast moving images.

I think regassing plasmas is the biggest myth going in TVs, it's a sealed unit, not like you can just stick a bottle in the side and fill it up like a soda stream.

I know its not, granted its not a simple soda stream bottle swap, needs to go back to the manufacturer, hence, we bought a lcd to replace the 9 month old plasma and that is still going strong today (almost 2.5 years on all day everyday)

You don't regas a plasma TV neither do you send it back to the manufacturer for regassing. It's a myth, an old wives tale.

My new 1080p Samsung has a contrast ratio of 10,000:1, if anything the picutre is too sharp and is a little difficult to look at. My friend has a 1080i Sony on a smaller screen and his looks brilliant.

So, I think any old HD telly would do the trick for games. I think I need to crack open GT5:P again

Yeah it does actually, I am actually looking around feeling dazed! Although I get hit by claymores more often

You must be then if you believe they get regased. A plasma has over 400,000 individually sealed cells. How would you go about regassing each of those sealed cells even if you could? Secondly you wouldn't need to anyway, as its the phosphors that wear out, not the gas.

im unsure how Relisys where technically going to regas the unit at their factory all i do know is they wanted almost the price of a new screen to take it away and bring it back with a screen that you can actually see an image in (in reality they would probbably just replace the unit for us i guess)

mabe you should ask teco (owners of relisys) since you are so very interested in it, all I know is our on all day plasma that was in our trade counter area suffered from severe fading to the point you could barely see an image, the manufacturer said it needed "re gassing" i'm guessing they know more about it than us both, mabe speak to them and see ?
