Lost my D:\ drive

Attempted to install Risk on my Dell Inspiron 2200 earlier and noticed it wasn't autorunning as usual. I went into my computer and notice that for some reason D:\ isn't mapped anymore.

How do I remap it as the DVD/CD drive please?

normally thats an indications drivers could be screwed or hardware died.

Reinstall the CDrom drivers, go to system/hardware/CD rom/ reinstall drivers

first of try a good old restart!

Check cables!

moving the thread to Computers an stuff may help i would guess most people in here are console gamers and havn't got a clue what a D:\ drive is, or how to remap it.

Well in the last week we found one PHer's hard disk had come un-plugged. So check the cables might be a good start.

Otherwise see if it's listed in device manager. (Right Click on My Computer, select Manage, Device Manager is one of the options on the tree).

Also have a look in the event logs.

Also worth a try...

Start | Run | Compmgmt.msc then hit enter

You should have an option in there called "Disk Management", click it. On the right hand half of the screen you should see the CD Drive. Right click it and hit "Change Drive Letter and Paths" and choose D:. I've seen this happen before when a USB key has arbitarily decided it was the D: drive and so the DVDR just lost its drive letter.

If it's not a lost drive letter then whilst the PC is booting up look to see it appears during the start up check. You can enter the BIOS and check that there is an optical drive listed in the boot devices. If it isn't there then it's either a dodgy cable connection, a dodgy cable or a dead drive. To check if it's a cable swap the hard drive IDE cable for the D: drive cable and reboot, if it still doesn't work then you're going to have to buy another drive.

Oops not sure why I put it in computer games forum, what a fool!

Thanks for the advice, I switched it off and back on again and it has reappeared. Typical Irish!
