Can a Wii play DVD's?

Can it?? My step son got one just before Christmas as part of a phone deal but it doesn't seem to like DVD's.

Seems pretty lame to me if it doesn't

Afraid it doesn't. Nintendo had plans to release one with DVD playback, but they never got round to it.
